Edit: Sorry, I was right. I was staring at my backup folder thinking I didn't make the right changes. I tried altering Rinoa, and it worked. Ward doesn't blink though-- his combat textures don't seem to align right, and the trick doesn't work with his casual wear or his weapon textures.
What I had to do to fix it was to completely avoid the battle texture upscales. I just used the SD variant for Squall and Rinoa and left all the battle textures in SD. The problem is that the Demaster tool has the dimensions for Ward's textures wrong entirely.
What you'd need to do to fix it is essentially start fresh with all the mods re-installed on a fresh FF8 install and avoid downloading the HD Battle Texture Pack. Oh, and if you use the LionHeart weapons pack, make sure it's the SD version too.
