This is by far the best FF8 version ever
I'm happy to say that this version was exactly what I was looking for: to revive the atmosphere of the game I played when I was seventeen years old with my PSX, with a graphic improvement adjusted to the modern era:

- I find the 4:3 aspect coherent with the original game, as we were all playing on different TV back in the days. In fact, stretching the aspect ratio looks horrible, and I have to say that I didn't even notice the black bands;

- The new character models are very well made. If you look at Squall's gunblade, you can see for example that the revolver it's in 3D, instead of being textured like the original -> https://www.androidcentral.com/sites/androidcentral.com/files/styles/xlarge/public/article_images/2019/06/ffviii-comparison-2.jpg?itok=XqZiRip0

- The backgrounds looks better than the old pixelated version. Since I was looking to revive the original atmosphere, there is nothing better for me than the original backgrounds, made by the guys who created the game;

- The fonts are similar to the original version, unlikely to the previous modded version, and this adds to the original atmosphere of the old game;

- The cheat system is very helpful for people like me that are not teenagers anymore and cannot spend too much playing videogames, and it helps enjoying the amazing story once again;

- Chocobo world was really crappy and I'm glad I don't have to play that ♥♥♥♥ again, while I can use Angelo in game to find the same items. If you are not Japanese, you have never had a Pocketstation back in the days, and I don't understand how people cry for not being able to play with a tamagotchi in 2019;

- 20 Euros today worth a pizza, and I'm happy to pay a pizza to the company who created the original masterpiece. If you complain because it's not free or you didn't get a discount when you possess the 2013 version, you are just an over-emotional and easy offended person, with an inflated sense of uniqueness. Companies needs to pay salaries and bills, and yes, they work for profits, they don't do it for charity. So, instead of spending weeks wasting your time on a forum hoping to change things, keep playing the 2013 version, or work one or two hours in your life and earn 20 bucks. And if you have to fight, fight for real issues and worthy causes: you will be on your path to become a responsible adult - hurray!

- Even if I hate social justice warriors and modern millennial ethics, I don't care if Siren wears a skirt or if Rinoa tied one more button on her shirt, as I don't play games to get aroused, and if you do, you might consider to get a life and find a woman.

I have both versions of FF8 here on Steam, and funny enough, I've bought the 2013 version exactly one year ago, the 3rd of September 2018. I spent a couple of days trying to install all the mods, and at the end of the day I played it only 3 hours: I wasn't so rapt. Yesterday, instead, I played for 5 hours non-stop. This version is entertaining me exactly like the original version did 20 years ago.

So thank you to the guys who made this happen, and I hope one day to play a real remake of this masterpiece!

The reviews speak for themselves and they are pretty bad so far.

You never had to play Chocobo World, it was completely optional. The American PS1 version played fine without a Pocketstation, I don't see why people hail removal of a completely optional mini-game as a good thing?

Thank you for your words Talana, I've just reviewed it with the exact same words. And don't worry, because even if there is someone pissed off by this remastered version commenting here and there, there are tens of thousands people silently enjoying it!

The stuff you can find in Chocobo world, is now included in what Angelo can dig up. So what`s the problem ?

I'd prefer it if squall looked more realistic and less big anime eyes he doesn't look like that in the fmvs.

The problem is removal of playable content. Removing playable content from a game is almost never a good thing.

I'm guessing the problem is that this is the one FF game where not leveling up is beneficial. This means that most serious players will not even think about using a limit break that is very rng and is guaranteed to give you exp. Its a bit like Odin, you don't really get him until you'r ready to power up.

I've played many versions of the game but only one that had pocket station, it didn't really make a difference to my playthrough.

As one of the people that approve its removal, let me explain my reasons why.

Chocobo World offered you items which are supposed to be limited. The Rosetta Stone for example. You could get an infinite amount of these items from Chocobo World, and all you had to do was let it run. Granted you could get these from Esthar at a store, but if I recall, you had to trade other items which were also rare in order to get it. I could be mistaken on this part though.

Now, if you think about this in an end game perspective, its fine, it allows you to min max to the full potential of what the game can do. The problem comes from lazy people. They just let it run, gather items, become OP all while doing absolutely nothing.

Even with every cheat enabled, you couldnt do this. You still had to actually play the game itself in order to strengthen your characters. Chocobo World put FF8 on autopilot.

Now, if you want to bring up all items/magic, that is debatable, as im unsure of how many times you can use it. So if you use it like 50 times, and get 50 Rosetta Stones anyways, then the removal of Chocobo World was more or less pointless.

And it`s still playable, just in another way.

Its writing off the same mini game as something else.

I understand your point, and I add one thing: Chocobo world had sense 20 years ago, because it was meant to add an additional gaming experience OUTSIDE your home. In fact, it was meant to be played when you were waiting for the train, or sitting at a cafeteria. It doesn't make sense to me to play it emulated on the pc in 2019. I really prefer to have the ability to use Angelo in game to acquire those items.

It's a single player game. Just because some people choose to cheese it isn't a reason to completely remove a mini game. Besides, the game can still be easily cheesed with Triple Triad grinding, does that mean Triple Triad should've been removed too? No.

This port looks "decent" enough, but Square could have give a discount for those who bought the previous re-release. Still this version is competent enough and i wish they could have added the true analog controls for the game and they could have upscaled the backgrounds quite easily.
