Greyback's journey - Mission 6 Druids in Distress
Getting my ass handed to me on this mission.

I checked online and people suggested mauler spam. Problem is, the friendly AI gets wiped by the Serpent before I can get any decent amount of units.

I tried both a very aggressive Mauler rush thing (didn't work) as well as maxing out on Maulers + Pitch Slingers + Sledgers. That didn't work either.

I am right now flummoxed and unable to finish the mission as a result.

Have you tried rushing your heroes to the druid's base? That's what I did, I had Longtooth on stand ground next to the tower to avoid engaging in melee, and have Wildeye and Grayback does the melee combat. You just have to micro them well, before their hp turn red pull them back behind the tower to recover. These three heroes should be able to handle the early attacks until you could build enough forces to push. You also don't have to maxed out or build up so many before you send in help. What I did was to send a group of 3 to 5 units at a time. Just keep forcing them to run past the enemies until they get to the druid's base. It'll be easier if you have pack wolves with these reinforcements to distract the enemy while your rushing them to Grayback's line. Wouldn't recommend Pitch Slingers with this strats though as they are too slow.

Also impossible for me. No matter what I try, the allies base is destroyed within the first 15 minutes. I can only reach Utaras base, but the amount of enemy forces makes it impossible to rush to my allies base. They really changed this mission compared to old BR.

Try building the training base just across the river where you first encounter a Serpent tower. That way your reinforcements are closer to the front line and also allows you to harass the AI and most likely draw some of the big wave coming from Utara's base to yours.

Ballistaman spam also helps greatly as it counters Utara's horde of Witches. Once you stabilize your line you can start adding more Brawler and Sledger for the attacking army.

You can also have some of your army preferably your Zen masters rush to the Druids base just by running past enemy units along the way.

Might also help if you watch a YouTube video of someone doing it.

I just tested this and can confirm, it does work wonders ;)

Problem is, OP said it didn't work for him. Druid's base gets overrun before he can "get decent amount of units".

If you think you can't aid the Druids in a timely manner, as I've said before rush your Zen masters to their base. Best to do it right in the beginning while your setting up your base as you won't run into too much enemies along the way. Preferably do it with Wildeye as he is the fastest out of the 3 of them, and when the cutscene triggers, Grayback and Longtooth teleports to Wildeye location. The 3 of them can defend the Druids while you build up your Mauler army.
