The urge to play Panzer General after Fantasy General
Good day,

Was curious how many of you after playing Fantasy General went back and played Panzer General? An odd urge I had since FG was spawned from PG the mechanics with turn based was the same and it gave me insight to both games flipping back and forth.

These days I play Order of Battle as the replacement for PG :) it just is more detailed for me and now playing FG2 for some 450+ hours that urge crept up again to play OOB :)

What other games did you flip through when playing Fantasy General?

I also enjoyed playing a game from Microprose, Darklands then my brother and I would duel it out with Squad Leader in the kitchen for hours :)

A side note :) WOULD LOVE to see someone revive Darklands. Was a very unique twist to fantasy gaming with some mid 1500's history.

Never stopped playing it - Grand Campaign is a total joy from start to finish (and no swamp maps ;)

You mention Panzer General (I loved all the old SSI 5 star series), but the more modern Slitherine Panzer Corps (PC) (sold on Steam) has basically replaced PG2 (which hasn't been supported other than by mod'ers since release).

The good news is that Panzer Corps 2 is coming out soon. For PC2, see https://store.steampowered.com/app/1072040/Panzer_Corps_2/?snr=1_7_15__13

The bad news is, like nick the devil, I still play Panzer Corps (as recently as last week) and I have heavily modified it to add hundreds of units, etc., so I am holding my breath to see if any of my mod will update to PC2.

You might also like "Panzer Strategy" (unit upgrade system is better than PC) and its successor "Strategic Mind: The Pacific" (like old SSI Pacific General).

Ah yes waiting as well for PC2 :) any of the old SSI games really were very enjoyable though I did like the old Pacific War (dos) which later was upgraded by Matrix Games. To my surprise after mentioning Darklands I did a search here and walla it is here :) Sooooo playing it again after so many years :)

Darklands looks very interesting. However, the current version on Steam, after reading several reviews, sounds too painful due to the copy protection (having to keep the PDF manual open at all times to answer the question correctly or lose your game). I hope someone remakes it some day. If you haven't tried "Legends of Eisenwald", I recommend it, as it has a similar German 15th Century type of theme.

Is darklands really playable with that 27 years old graphics?

Apparently so, as long as you enjoy the pain and punishment of dated pixelated graphics.

Probably I don't. And then screen resolution like 640×480 or probably even worse.

I think battle brothers comes here in mind to be the more fun game with deep complexity ! Great game I will continue with after FG2 !

And dont´forget......in december Phoenix Point comes out ;-)

Battle Brothers is a gem. Truly. There's really nothing like it, down to the silly head-and-torso figurine style.

In spite of that, it's not silly in any way - it nails the grimdark feel and it has an exquisitely written story. All the more impressive for it being a sandbox game.

Can't recommend it highly enough :)

And Phoenix Point, aaah.. we'll see. UFO Enemy Unknown reborn or not :)

nope plays nicely though you are using DosBox (comes with the game) learn how to use it and your set. It comes starting out at 3000 speed (better term but I just woke up :) ) I believe it is alt+F12 to increase the spead - 6000ish is nice for my system or alt+F1 to lower it.

Since I grew up racing home to play pong on the atari this is nice to see it is stll around

Darklands :) also alt+shift to make dosbox windowed or note. makes it easy to get to the manual :) and ya, back in those days you had to work a little to enjoy the games. Midi and pixels was cutting edge back then.

General Gonzo, I have 336 hours in Battle Brothers and only 72 in Legends of Eisenwald, so you could be right. I burned out on BB, it's just a little too fantasy for me. I wish there were more men vs men battles and fewer creature and boss creature battles. It got a little over the top with the last few DLC and I finally uninstalled it. But it is definitely a fun sandbox game. I am not familiar with Phoenix Point, I will check it out, thanks.

For what it's worth, I also highly recommend it.

It's the baby of Julian Gollop, the father of ye olde (think 90s old) X-Com series (up to including Apocalypse). It's a spiritual successor to the first couple (and most successful) of the series.

A very Lovecraftian story too :)

@Mhorhe is Phoenix Point on Steam? For some reason, I can't seem to find it here, but maybe I'm spelling it wrong?

Sadly, if I remember correctly, it migrated to Epic Store in spring(ish).

They made the same argument that others did, that the smaller store cut allowed them extra budget for dakkadakka.

Which, to be honest, I think it's perfectly true in their case. It's a small team, mostly bulgarian, even if with the TBS Wizard at their head.

Release date is sometime in December.

@Mhorhe thanks for the breadcrumb trail. I'll check the Epic Store.
