Start-Question
Hi,
at long term is it better to rush the missions to get more gold-bonus at the end or is it better just to try to defeat/explore the whole map for exp-bonus?

loot everything you can get within wealth turns. A saved turn is just 25 gold, a cave can give 100 or a good artifact or weapons/armor for upgrades

Explore the whole map, especially capturing and/or looting all victory hexes like ruins, caves, settlements, etc., that give loot, either gold, artifact or armor/weapons/mana.

You'll have plenty of gold, probably. Getting more artifacts and experience is more valuable. If there's still stuff to loot on the map, that's going to be worth much more than 25 gold for finishing a turn earlier.

You can do both if you do the maps right. You might fail to the first time you try some maps. Using mercenaries from the Sunken Lands missions on makes it easier (to expensive in most earlier missions - though there's one where it tells you to hire some where you need to). Making commander choices in questions your father asks you so you can get the War Camp skill from mid-game on helps with that so you can make a war camp to recruit mercenaries from even before you take any cities in some missions

I just finished the Sunken Lands and I am sitting at 7000 golds with 36 supply worth of units out of 35 supply limit. So I would say golds are totally useless at mid to late game.

By the way, I have also maxed out three of my heroes with other heroes and units almost maxed out (10 is the level cap). So exp is also not that important. You should focus on getting good artifacts such as water boots, horse tokens and cursed amulet.

What difficulty is that on? And did you ever save and reload when you got a bad result? That seems a bit high to me although I agree there is plenty of gold.

Are you deliberately keeping your heroes all together and maximizing their Exp collection as a group? That also seems on the high side to me, although I can imagine it's possible if you focus on collecting as much of the Exp for the whole group as possible.

I kind of wish the Exp were divided evenly among all units in range, rather than given fully to all, so there wouldn't be the "strategy" of crowding everyone together to get more Exp. But it also doesn't matter that much if you just don't optimize for it.

I am playing on normal difficulty. And no I don't save scum for golds. It is tedious enough to save scum for artifacts that are actually useful. If any, I save scum to avoid getting golds half way through. Most of my golds come from finishing the missions quickly.

For exp, I do group units together to maximize exp gains if possible.

So it would be fair that you treat this more as an experience of enjoying becoming more powerful rather than a strategy challenge where you're fighting to win?

Exploring the white dots on the mini map is essential to get new equipment, some mercenaries or loot in form of gold or resources.
And that´s much more worse than getting the 25 gold per tick for finishing the map early.

As someone wrote above, in midgame you will swim in gold since you can do not much with it once you got your roster of units.
