Is there any logic to how and where fires start?
I started up a new save and managed to limp a fairly intact derelict to KLeg, the damn ship has a fire break out every 10 minutes and there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to why and how the fires form.

I thought it may have had something to do with the condition of the electric cables but the wires where the fires start are just as likely to be in pristine as poor condition.

Next question is what do you do about the ship filling with smoke? So far I'm just leaving the airlocks open into KLeg but it feels as if new fires start before the old smoke gets vented.

i've been having fires with the TU-76a. I noticed the conduits were throwing sparks sometimes, i think if the O2 level is too high it will happen. I need to start keeping more fire extinguishers on board. The ship has an 02 tank to refill itself, but the 70% nitrogen that should be there wasn't until i opened the door and "borrowed" some from kleg.

I think if you were putting 02 into that derelict but not nitrogen that might account for fires.

I also think spontaneous fires might be a bit more aggressive than appropriate in this build. :)

Totally makes sense. Just remembered the Apollo 1 disaster. I'm getting in my EVA suit, shutting down the O2 pump and vacuum my ship now until I run a full electric circle check.
Didn't get a single fire alarm yet and I never want one.
I made sure I had both N2 and 02 pumping. Still feel that smoke is bugged somehow, or fire just creates more smoke than intended. I bought both the c02 and toxin scrubber at the sundries kiosk, and managed to vent the ship only to have the cabin refill with smoke the moment I undocked. Ended up rage quitting from there, I'll have to wait for a few updates before I pick this up again.
So far it seems like if there's visible sparking it can start a fire with some RNG behavior. I've found the only reliable way to have zero fires is to repair every conduit in the ship to 90%+ or vent the oxygen completely. I suspect that the sparking may cause damage to the conduits which rapidly results in their condition dropping and that causes the fire, but I haven't actually caught any fires while they start yet to confirm this.

I've found it easier to repair the conduits completely first and then either remove them at 100% if salvaging, or repair them first before fixing hull breaches.

I think that welding near loose items can also cause fires, but I may be misattributing things there.
I think a high load in a short period time tends to set the cables on fire. I was modifying that really crude starter ship (the one that doesn't even have an air pump.) and after I installed both HVAC and heater, the ship keeps acting funny.
I had my starter ship totally restored to 100% for all floors, conduits, walls and equipment. I thought I'd be free from fire, but while I was restoring some items dismantled from a derelict, I had a fire starting in my ship.
It could be due to the item getting on fire, or the sparks caused by my tools setting some fire, I don't know.
Anyway, since version 0.15 I rather repair/restore any item before I bring them to my ship. Once bitten, twice shy
Sent a report about fire sensibility when i was playing campaign with the arena test and i see it is still an issue...
I figured it out. They start out of the corner of your eye. Or sneak up behind you.
Ergo, hire 2 crew members and then just stand in a triangle so the fires can't get you.
I've figured out a major source of grief for my playthrough.

Lights.

If I install a light that isn't 100% repaired it nearly instantly bursts into flame
