will my character automatically use the strength trainer during rest or sleep periods, or do I have to do something to make him do so?

They may not automatically use it depending on what they want to do (e.g. they might just want to watch TV!). So if you specifically want them to exercise you'll want to make them do it.

For now there seems to be an exploit where training just before going to sleep will keep the training state active throughout the super-fastforward time. But my insomniac at least will also train on his own during sleep hours.

I don't see an option to manually train when r-clicking on the exercise machine - how do you force training?

There should be, is it powered? Characters also can't exercise if in pain or miserable.
