If you have a small derelecit, it won't be very lucrative (if at all), don't waste too long looting it. Or not at all. Obviously it depends of your need, a small gas freighter is still valuable to get the canisters if you need them.
Focus item with value. Don't bother with heater, sensors ,regular pump and bins. Gor for intake, thruster, reactor part, nav console. Unless you need the part for your ship or for ship flipping. Do note that the "$$$$" indicator take the repair status of the item for its value. So a nearly destroyed nav station will appear as "cheap", when it's actually expensive.
Always repair stuff to full before selling.
Order to sell items : black market -> permit kiosk-> scrap kiosk. You shouldn't sell anything to the scrap kiosk. There is no drawback for selling to the black market, only the fact you only sell a specific list that will change over item.
Buy what you are missing. Laser, eva all can be bought.
Dolly and EVA are your 2 big main early game focus. They allow you to spend less time scavenging, which in turn make you more profit
Expand your ship, mostly toward operation time. You want to vist several wrecks per trip. More batteries, N2 and O2 ready to refuel.... The canister are expensive in Kleg, get them from wrecks. If you play your card well, you'll never refuel anything but electricity in Kleg.
Target cluster of wrecks, visit them all. Also, Kleg go from left to right on the "map" when you start (and for a while with the big orbit around the sun). So if you go on the right of it, Kleg will "catch up" to you, saving fuel and time. Meanwhile, going on its left mean it will fly away.
There is a trick to find potentially good derelict to. At Kleg commercial, "north" of the map you have a kiosk to buy and sell ships. You can buy derelicts floating around, the same one you can scvange. Check the big one, especially if they have potentially highly rewarding room (liek reactor room) and ship you know have high value item (like halberd or the racer that have hydra intake by default, whether they are there or destroyed is RNG). Note their distance and ID (not the name).
Go back to your ship and call the ship that are roughly at this range, until you find the ID of the ship you want to scavenge.
Still RNG, as the ship can be a good big ship that was utterly cored and with just an airlock left, but much less so.
