Once connected, just make sure the pump is powered and set to automatic *and* that the sensors are powered and turned on (since all of the above makes sense to turn off sometimes - for example, so you don't waste air/power when your ship is temporarily not airtight - like after damage or during building.)
Last but not least, with Turbo pumps, you can turn the "Turbo" switch off or on, depending on whether you want the pumps to go blazing fast, or a bit more modestly. (Pumps in general can also be switched to "reverse", which is an interesting option if you want to, say, save the air in a room or airlock before opening it up to a vacuum.)
Hope this helps!
