As for armor, that is tricky in space. Relativistic impactors don't really care how thick your hull is. Also, the logistics of super heavy anything in space would be brutal. Better detection and evasion would work out better, as would active defenses.
As for currently in game, I wonder if just having a hallway and outer wall would be enough to protect from collisions.
Once I find a decent long term ship, I always redesign the interior removing most wires on the outer hull and putting everything in the middle, including living quarters. Leaving the outer area as cargo holds.
also, at that 'destroyed' point, people would just bash it to dust or break it down for salvage.
Are you suggesting that obliterated be removed and replaced with a space-filling installed but irreparable junk item? Again, that might make more sense than it vanishing, but you would have to consider a couple things.
1) Would people just bash it to junk (could be disabled I suppose)
2) Would it just be a step added to dismantle? (This I could get behind, if not for #3)
3) Would the devs have to create a whole other asset group for every item that can be a bricked item.
I think the biggest advantage of this, however, is that you would board a wreck and there would be a row of super busted RCSs you cant repair, but until you disassemble them, there also wouldnt be a stupid amount of scrap all over the floor covering everything, like you tend to see now.
Destroyedis still when the station is still there, but does not work and cannot be repaired. So you need to scrap it. So it takes time. Nothing will be able to repair those. Bu you still need to remove them if you plan to restore otherwise the destroyed item would lower the price of the ship.
Damaged is something that cannot be used but is repairable. So needs parts and time to repair.
And worn just needs some restoration.
