Whats the point of a backpack
Since we can't keep a tool box in it and don't need to carry scrap around with how much we have available in a derelict whats the point of having a back pack?

To pack things around. On your back.
Me, I love it. I have no idea how you play, but the ability to carry things back *NOT* one at a time to my ship is a godsend, honestly.

What are you putting in the pack? I can only put scrap items in containers starting with the "Taking inventory" patch. I have to drag things to my ship one at a time to sell them.

Stuff like floors and conduits for building, mostly. Tools (before I got the laser).

I carry the backpack in my hand while wearing the space suit and fill it up with random crap I find while out exploring.

They are great for space saving and organization.

The pack holds 8x8(Plus the 4 small pouches) but only takes ups 2x2 hex's.
So you can get 20 squares of storage space for the cost of 4. Great for small items.

Im just going to reiterate, if you have the pod that is the most complete what do you need those small items for? Are we supposed to carry around a bunch of the scrap items to repair or are we supposed to build a larger ship?

Well, you always want some spare parts and floor/hull materials and patches on hand. Especially before you swap or upgrade the coffin, 1 micro hit will completely ruin your day.

FYI the tool box you put tools in then inside ship drop it. your guy should auto go grab the tool out of it if its needed i think. its also balanced as tool boxes are bulky so putting them in a back pack is usualy not did even in real life.

(backpacks are so useful :)
im still on the previous version which still allows toolboxes inside backpacks, as still need to go around the whole ship which has backpacks stashed everywhere, so that i can take them out and re-arrange things before updating, so as not to lose them)

Well, you're not supposed to do anything specific (at least at this point), it's a free-form sandbox game you play as you like. That being said, you are going to need replacement parts of all sorts if you are doing any repairs on salvaged items - fully repaired stuff will get you the most money when you sell. If that's not something you want to bother with, that's totally fine as well.

Food, drinks, PDAs, clothes, all sorts of small items are spread around that can be useful or valuable to a player, and the backpack greatly helps facilitate collecting those things. I carry it with me everywhere, even when I go EVA I carry it in one hand with my Halvorston toolbox in the other. Between them I've got every tool I need, plus extra batteries for each, EVA suit battery, spare oxygen bottle, and room to collect whatever bits and bobs I spot along the way that I want or may need back on my ship. But for you, none of that may be the case, and you may decide to not bother with the backpack, which is perfectly acceptable.
