Me, I love it. I have no idea how you play, but the ability to carry things back *NOT* one at a time to my ship is a godsend, honestly.
The pack holds 8x8(Plus the 4 small pouches) but only takes ups 2x2 hex's.
So you can get 20 squares of storage space for the cost of 4. Great for small items.
im still on the previous version which still allows toolboxes inside backpacks, as still need to go around the whole ship which has backpacks stashed everywhere, so that i can take them out and re-arrange things before updating, so as not to lose them)
Well, you're not supposed to do anything specific (at least at this point), it's a free-form sandbox game you play as you like. That being said, you are going to need replacement parts of all sorts if you are doing any repairs on salvaged items - fully repaired stuff will get you the most money when you sell. If that's not something you want to bother with, that's totally fine as well.
Food, drinks, PDAs, clothes, all sorts of small items are spread around that can be useful or valuable to a player, and the backpack greatly helps facilitate collecting those things. I carry it with me everywhere, even when I go EVA I carry it in one hand with my Halvorston toolbox in the other. Between them I've got every tool I need, plus extra batteries for each, EVA suit battery, spare oxygen bottle, and room to collect whatever bits and bobs I spot along the way that I want or may need back on my ship. But for you, none of that may be the case, and you may decide to not bother with the backpack, which is perfectly acceptable.
