In the mean time, depending on the situations you can either use some workers to make bertha on the move to pressure the enemies (with the support of some soldiers/rangers or else your berthas will die to IR horses).
Or you can spam flamethrowers.
Its IR1 also have the worst Anti Air capabilities as its static AA is derivated from pillbox which is an IR2 tech, note that this can be mitigated if you use Machinegun Balloons.
Still, at IR1 you are already with its best unity, the Berthas, BBerthas have an amazing range, amazing damage, amazing area of damage. and not amazing, but great defense. Their only downfall is their painfully mediocre speed.
Also, at IR1, you'll have the Machinegun Balloons which has a great synergy with the sturdy Berthas as both are slow as fu and balloons will erase any air raid and infantry on your berthas, your berthas will erase any Anti Air targeting your balloons, and both will fu with Death Scytes/Light Cannons/Howitzers that are coming in range.
Just be carefull that this combo can be countered by mass of Tankettes or Csaba AT at close range, as their pop will be fully invested on them while your pop will be mixed between things to defend berthas and berthas.
Germany is an amazing defensive powerhouse at FFA, if they let you alone for too long you'll have Pillboxes+Cannon/AA to easily defend your slow berthas. Still, be careful, if your opponent is Turkey as time will be on his side, not yours.
In Team Matches they are bellow the average because of the high cost mixed with limited resources, and a total lack of mobility.
I would advice you to NOT PLAY as Germany team matches with large open maps where the attack may pass through everywhere, your units may be powerful, but they are too slow to cooperate with your team, the match may even just end before your berthas reach the battlefield.
