How to fix MW2 after entering a hacked lobby

I made this because many people are entering hacked lobbies and having their settings / options changed without their consent. Although it is very easy to revert, most people don't know how to how to do it.

An example of a messed up config file is:

- The mini-map seems to be 'covered' around your screen or is not there at all.
- None or some of your controls don't seem to work or stick after changing them.
- The game is lagging intensively due to super high graphic settings.
- There are strange numbers along the top part of the screen.
- The in-game sounds / music is messed up.

NOTE - This will NOT reset your rank. If you wish to reset your rank, refer to this thread - http://steamcommunity.com/app/10190/discussions/0/810938082644067893/

Steps to reset:

1. Make sure 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer' is closed down. You do not need to close Steam down.

2. WINDOWS: Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2\players

MAC: /Users/[YOUR USER ACCOUNT]/Library/Application Support/Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2/players

3. Find the 'config_mp' file and delete it. This file is the config file that stores your settings for MW2 Multiplayer. The file will automatically reappear when you restart the game.

4. Restart MW2 Multiplayer.

5. Reconfigure your Graphics settings + controls (if necessary).

6. You are done!

You may also want to consider changing your config_mp file to 'Read-only'. This way your file cannot be messed up or changed again from joining another hacked lobby. Note that every time you want to change a setting or control you will need to exit the game and turn off 'Read-only' when you want to do this. This can be done by going into the file properties for the config_mp file and unticking 'Read-only' again.

Notes:

You CANNOT be banned from simply entering a hacked lobby or having a changed config file. Unless you are running cheats or mods on your computer, then you don't need to worry about a VAC ban.

You can actually open the config file yourself with notepad and tweak a few things if you wish. For example - you can increase the number of ping bars from 4 to 10 for a more accurate reading. You can also tweak the glass physics to float up into the air. There are also a few graphic tweaks you can make.

Deleting the config file(s) will not change your rank in any way.

You seem to know a lot about this so I´d like to ask you something.
I play MW2 on a windows pc and the other day when I was in a FFA game some dude was running a hacked server and after 1-2 min of seemingly regular gameplay I got disconnected with some weird dc-message like: "Disconnected: Enjoy your de-rank!" and then I noticed that all my classes had been renamed so that their names combined formed a sentence; "I Got Deranked By Matched Player Enjoy It" or something like that. Afterwards I got the message "Notice; Your data is from an old version of the game" accompanied by the option between either cancelling (thus closing the game) or resetting. This put me back to square one, back where I was when I first bought the game. Lvl 1, nothing unlocked. Can this be undone?? I want all my progress with various tasks and objectives back.
Currently if I were to play I´d perhaps gain one or two levels but I´d then get the same notice next time I opened up the game and once again be forced to reset.

If your rank files are corrupted then honestly I would just reset as written in the OP, the method hasn't changed since it was posted and it still completely resets your rank files.

If you want your previous rank back, there is a way but there's no guarantee it will always work (it depends if you have a back-up saved etc;)

It is really annoying of you wanted to not to enter on their host, but it keeps you connecting to their hosting which is really frustrating to play as a normal game... Hope this issue be fix sooner so that outsider host from MW2 steam cannot generate their own server here...

I'm getting tired of this myself. Now i can't even control my mouse! It wont fire and if it does it is pointed at the stupid ground and not at the target. Any other game anywhee, it works right except this game. so it isnt my mouse messing up.
This game is getting boring because of all the hackers who have nothing better to do than cheat.
I'm thinking of just quitting the game because this happens all the time. and then the hacks say gg,,, right. for the cheaters it is.
After this keeps on awhile , i just shut the game down. and not play for several days. I wish I had my money back. I like the game not the cheaters. Maybe they are so insecure about themselves, they feel the need to cheat for high scores.
Not fun.

I think this workaround is only for altered settings, not for callsigns/emblems unlocking etc. Check your own thread for the answer, dunno if it is still valid though
