I've got the same problem. My NAT Type is strict for some months. In the last year, I hadn't got theese problems....
I presume, that the problems with the NAT-typ are bugs, I am not able to explain it in an other way..
i really dont think you can make a guide since you havent solved anyones problems yet
Because you've solved so many problems by reminding everyone how terrible the developers are and so on.
at first i had a netgear modem/router for my dsl ... i could never get an open nat with that... i tried everything... forwarding ports, dmz, it didnt have the upnp option available...
then i put it in bridge mode so it acted as a modem only and hooked up a linksys router to it... this router was flashed with custom ddwrt firmware... and had the upnp ability... upon enabling upnp i was able to get open nat...
fast forward to when i recently upgraded my internet, and was concerned about being host... the idea is that you are only chosen as host if you can tell the matchmaking+ system that your nat is open... here follows my saga with open nat after the upgrade...
i now have fibre optic so it is just a straight ethernet jack in teh wall... no modem, or at least not one i an access, so i hooked up a newer wdr3700 netgear router... again with custom firmware from DD-WRT.com and decided to go into the advanced windows firewall settings and specifically enunciate port openings for a myriad of ports, 1500, 3101, 3107, 28960 a bunch of the 20K i dont recall, and others that are related to mw2 for all programs, because i feel that there might be some kinda whos program is reading the port problem as all steam games are opened via the steam:// command... so is it steam.exe opening the port or iw6mp.exe opening it?
now with upnp enabled i get an open nat upon opening mw2... somewhere in the midst of playing my nat will magically turn itself to strict... i know this because i would stop getting clients as host, and if i restarted the mw2 program my nat would be strict.. i could easily fix this by doing one of two things... restarting the firewall with the simple command
powershell.exe restart-service mpssvc
or by unplugging the ethernet connection going into my laptop then reinserting... essentially performing a down-up command on the ethernet card
windows firewall or policy manager does something funny with the upnp and causes nat to become strict...
i fixed this by turning off the windows firewall while in game... that way i didnt have to go restarting it every 15 min... i guess i could write a script for this, but my ROUTER's firewall is such that im not worried about ANYTHING getting through... plus I am log CRAZY so every connection that is made to the router is dropped to the syslog-ng log... but pride goeth before the fall so i always reenable the firewall after i am done playing... i would script this as well, but i have given up on scripting anything alongside a steam command as the evil vac gnomes are monitoring what starts and stop the games and steam things... ie scripts or other programs...
lately there was an issue that after all the fixes that i did the nat was still strict... i then realized that i had forgotten that I enabled a virtual networking device that is required to be enabled in order for my virtual machine from oracle called vmware to work... so the only way to get an open nat is to have that virtual device turned off...
i still have the problem where i have to unplug and plug even with the firewall off... so take that for what its worth...
but i will tell you this... if your nat says strict on the opening screen you will more not likely than likely be chosen for host...
there...
that was my epic saga with open and strict nats...
take it for what its worth
the developers are rock stars in my eyes...
seriously... no pun... my true to life words
they have done things with so many restrictions... like the matchmaking+... it works pretty well given that it connects many many many different networks... with many many different policies in place... and it works without crashing and burning
i just feel that they... mainly demonware... have been paid in full, and probably still receive royalties off the steam sales... and they should fix the favela and the forced host BS.... its not that hard... one is fixed by erasing the blacklist on the map... and/or enabling it.... which would take five minutes... the second... would take a little scripting, but would be easily doable
also i was just stating that you should solve some peoples problems before you write what will be interpreted as scripture and pin it to the top fo the boards...
please dont get me wrong laptop... im pompous... i know it... and no matter how much trash i talk... i give you all kinds of respect... again true to life words
is it a v1, v2, v2_vc, 3500L or a 3500u.... either way you need to know and get dd-wrt at www.dd-wrt.com
thats if you dont have teh upnp option....
but netgear is open source so it should... who knows... do you have QOS as well... dd-wrt will usually offer you qos which makes your game play much better
Looks like I have v1 and dd-wrt doesn't have anything to help. I'll keep messing around with settings to see if anything turns up. On a worse note, when I boot up MW2 it says "connecting to IWnet" and hangs there. Things just keep getting better and better :/
P.S.. I have upnp turned on.
