Please, stop spreading misinformation or just saying the game is officially shutdown, activision has confirmed the servers have been shutdown temporarily because of fixes.
This is probably happening due to the hackers issue and the fact that servers of older CODs have been fixed on xbox.

The game could be very well shut down forever, Activision have a habit of abandoning their older titles and they may just decide to leave the game offline permanently rather than try and patch up the security problem.

There's more than enough people to get consistent lobbies, I don't see why they'd abandon the game when they recently sorted out the XBOX servers for the game pass.

Furthermore why would they tweet anything if abandonment was the case?

They would at least confirm the PC servers have been taken offline rather than doing it and not telling anyone about it and causing confusion.

Apparently the steamdb branch has had recent activity so it is possible the multiplayer may return...

Looks like it will be alive for a long time, because info from SteamDB confirming that, a new game branch has been created with name "rc_s", and after 5 years beta branch and rc_s branch updating intensively, for like 1-3 hour - new update in these branches

Have you ever played a game abandoned by the developers? I did, TF2, they just stopped releasing updates and never communicated with the community untill 2019 when there was a glitch costing them money which they fixed. Even if what you're saying was true about the community being small (it's not true), why kill something that brings you money? And why would the shut down the MW2 servers and not their first 5 games?

Tons of videos online of MW2 on console finally being playable, so I kind of doubt they'd fix Xbox 360 servers and ignore the PC servers.
