I'm not getting any killstreaks when using the AC-130

So, this is very strange.
I've noticed that using the ac130 is not unlocking me the next killstreak.
I've tested this out,
I went on a streak until i got the ac130, then i let someone kill me, when I respawned, I activated it... And I'm sure I got more than 5 kills on all occasions I used this, but the predator missile never showed up...

Is this supposed to be a feature or what?

The AC130 only builds up killstreaks when you are still alive when you earned it. Same for the chopper gunner.

People would simply be getting themselves killed at 11 kills, respawn and then use the AC130 to get another 11 kills to build up the killstreak again (or certainly at least 5 for a predator missle or 7 for the harriers).

But that is what I was doing, getting 11 kills, then letting someone kill me.
Activating the ac130, but nope, no predator or harrier in sight after i was done with it.

You've already answered your own question, that specific killstreak only counts for when you are still alive when you earned it, otherwise people would be offing themselves in-game and then kicking off an AC130 to get them on their way boosted to another 11 kills, clans for example would abuse this mechanic massively for an advantage.

if you get ac or chopper gunner and use it without dying, it continues your 11+ killstreak counting towards the emp or nuke which requires 24 ks. if you die while using it or before using, your ks resets and you can only build it up with regular kills again not with the rewards from previous life. same way rewards from care packs doesn't give the kills toward your ks.
