Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) - Multiplayer

I've been hacked? What do I do to protect myself?
I was on a multiplayer lobby, and one player was able to hack into my PC deep enough to access my browser and open p*rnhub. What should I do in order to see if he's done anything else that's malicious, and what can I do on my end to prevent another player (in any multiplayer game) from doing this again?

So you've not been hacked, but likely you were in an american lobby and a player took advantage of a known bug in how the game hooks to steam and they triggered opening the link in your default browser.

There's a known sadistic player who sells these kind of tools to these sad players and sadly it affects a whole series of COD games and otther games using a similar engine.

You should do a virus scan on your PC in case the URL tried downloading somehowever however, I don't think you can completely prevent something like this happening again.

What I do recommend is you create a new standard windows user account on your PC (basically an account without admin privileges) and use it just for for gaming. If you think this is too much then you're better off playing other games where people didn't report such issues.

I posted on another forum discusson about this with proof the issue is related to steam and how it allows games hooked to steam to execute commands it thinks are from the game itself, but the steam moderator locked and edited my post.. like super fast, as if they were trying to hide sometimes.. lol

Thanks for all the knowledge, I have a good idea of what I should do then.

Oh, give up on MW2. The multiplayer is mediocre, anyway. Just felt like going for a nuke, but compromising my system, even a little, isn't worth the trouble.

Fair enough, playing MW2 solo is tough and I feel bad for american players because this sort of thing never seems to happen to us in Europe timezones.
The multiplayer experience is much better for us as well as we have kicktools to keep cheaters out and I see a lot of players partying with their friends.

stopped playing due to hacked lobbies, one game somebody was hacking and i literally couldn't exit out of the match or alt tab out. had to restart my PC. idiots always ruin games for others.

This is something different, this is a modder disabling the escape menu, there are ways to exit the lobby without needing to alt tab out e.g. join a friends game session, open task manager to exit the game or block the hosts ip

I did make a steam guide on this a while ago, cause as legit players we can make it hard for modders to play if we stop joining their lobbies ^^

So what do you do to block an IP of certain lobbies? How do you block them? Is your steam guide still posted? Can you post a link to the guide? How do people search for your guide? O.k. I think I've asked enough questions for now.

I have a kicktool which I can use to block known modders automatically but for new modders, I have to choose to block them at least once.

I don't know how people search for my guide, but it's on my profile and it also appears in steam guides under the game store

If you want to try this yourself the manual way without a kicktool, you can checkout this link: How to never rejoin a Modded Lobby

Awesome. Now this is cool. So if say like someone is having trouble adding an IP manually to the firewall rules, you have a kicktool that anyone can use and its downloadable? Oh and btw, ty for being so helpful here in the community. A lot of ppl do appreciate it. Thanks again.

Yes, my kicktool has a one-click button for exiting lobbies, blocking hosts etc
Each player fills in a short form, then if accepted after an initial review; you receive Microsoft 365 logins for downloading the tool
