Question about ending (spoilers everywhere)

When I confronted the Dentist, I punched him and then gave him the Tooth Lilly and when he asked for the longer sniff, I just hold it up to them and nothing happens. That same line of dialogue repeats over and over where they requested the long sniff. I tried it again and this time didn't punch the Dentist but just went right for the Tooth Lilly. Same thing happened where the 'long sniff' request never takes place. I've seen playthroughs where someone holds the tooth lilly out first and then the dentist crashes into the window and it breaks but that never happened in my game.

I only had the one kiss from the lady in the lounge and I had to use that to create the tooth lilly, is there somewhere to get a second kiss that I can use to make the dentist 'recognize' the tooth lilly? or at least need to smell it less?

I didn't want to play that ending again (after 5 reloads to see if I could get him to trigger the event with the tooth lilly) so I just punched him twice with the gloves and called it a day but that was kind of a downer since I had the good ending ready to go, or so I thought.

I helped 22 out of 22 residents but still got the Residual Melancholy achievements so I'm guessing I need to account for the tooth lilly somehow?

Tried again and even with another kiss handy, the game gets stuck after I 1) punch him 2) kiss him 3) give him the tooth lilly. He asks for the long sniff and I hold it up and nothing at all happens, over and over again. Oh well.

I held it at least 15 seconds, the playthroughs I watched only held it 4-5 seconds maybe? I definitely appreciate the tip though, i just think the dentist is never going to let me NOT punch him out the window.

Right on and that definitely makes sense, but everytime I tried to just give him the lily after he first sniffed it, he just kept sniffing it each time I showed it to him. The only thing the game would even let me do is punch him, every other action just got ignored while he repeated the same line (something like a very long sniiiiiiff haha).

Wow, I'm curious if you ever got this sorted?
I might try from a new save or something, but this sounds to me like an unfortunate bug or glitch that most people don't stumble into, and that I hope you can find a way around in the unlikely event you haven't already. But in case anyone else encounters something similar and reads this then that's still my take. 🙂
