Support for NES Controller w/USB adapter

Since the Xbox 360 controller has a ghastly bad D-pad, I'd like to use an NES controller with the Tomee NES/USB adapter and play this the right way. The NES/USB controls work great in the select screen and also the in-game menu (pressing "1" pulls that up), but does not work while a game is running. Obviously since it works in menus then there is some support, but I tried all the mapping options and can't get in-game control to work. Is my only option a Steam controller or crappy Xbox D-pad? Thanks

Get a ps4 controller, it works just fine without much setup and has a great d-pad (I can play Ghosts 'n Goblins with it).

You could try using steam to map it to keyboard controls. steam>settings>controller> then see if your controller is listed in generic then map the keys to whatever keyboard keys are used. I believe you can do it per game also.. Have used that option for games that didnt function correctly with xbox one.
