What controller do you use?
What do you guys use to play? I'm thinking of getting one of those Sega USB controllers from Amazon. Would that work for this ?

I use a xbox one controller. I don't know about the Retro-Bit Genesis controller, but I bought their Saturn controller and it broke in 3 hours. I don't recommend their products at all.

I am using a playstatiom ds4 controller with ds4windows which lets games recognize it as an xinput controller which most games made for modern systems use. And i dont recommend getting that genesis usb controller since the game is likely to not detect it since it's probably dinput.

Steam controller.
It may work or not. If you want, you can give WoJ XInput Emulator a try. https://worldofjoysticks.com/

Does the steam controller work for games that are not on steam? Like if I have some old platformers from GOG will that work?

Also I do have a PS3 controller, but it never worked if I plug into the PC :(
Also, it doesn't have a D-Pad, so not sure how well games like contra would work with a stick

Add them to the Steam client and it works. It all works alright to be honest. I don't have a proper d-pad controller for this so I make do. haha

I only use Logitech pads cause it works with both DInput and XInput games. Currently using F310.

When you say DInput and XInput what do you mean?

Oh cool, that Logitech F310 looks very neat if it can support all the games natively! And quite affordable, too. I think I'm going to get that one, it has good reviews.
Thanks for the recommendation!

Have you tried it with the D-Pad? I just got up to the top of the water fall on my first try. I'm surprised how well it works. I've never really used it before.

no, I just use it like a Xbox controller, good for me, I beat all Contra games, with saves of cource, i'm not a ultra hardcore gamer)) but I think it doesn't matter d-pad or x-pad, you can tune steam controller whatever you want

I use the 8BitDo SN30 Pro, the buttons map perfectly and it feels great.

I think I would have gotten the steam controller, but they don't ship to Canada for some reason, so I can't buy it
