It really looks like a cheap game...
Graphics look great, music sounds great... but man... those menus are horrible, the overall presentation of the game looks really cheap in my opinion.

Its a game that is over 20 years old. The DE version got a graphics and audio overhaul, but only a few playability issues were updated. Nostalgia... It is what it is.

Gameplay, graphics and audio are perfect... The main issue here is the overall presentation of the game, seriously the menus are worse than the original version of the game. Why it has to open another window to log into my microsoft account? Could't they just add an ingame login option? It breaks the fluidity of the game.

I pointed out the cheap looking UI during the beta and my post went unanswered. There's also something off with the animations that makes the game feel cheap. Someone pointed out there's a gap when the unit animations repeats unlike the original game where it's a smooth loop.

The reality is Forgotten Empires is not a AAA game developer. While Forgotten Empires seems to have a lot of passion for the Age of Empires series, they don't have the skills of the original team. I wish Microsoft gave the DE series to a different developer. I'm sure if Relic (who's making AoE4) made the DE's, the quality would have been much better.

Let's hope when AoE is up for a remake again in 10 years, Forgotten Empires has better talent or Microsoft chooses a different developer.

I bought the whole Age of Empires series during the summer sales, I'm currently playing AoE2 and my opinion of the game is the same, It really looks cheap. AoE2 HD Edition has an overall better feeling and presentation.

I'm not a fan of the DoW and CoH series, but you can't deny the quality of Relic's games is much higher than the AoE DE's. (I particularly hate squads of units and the static capture points used in DoW and CoH. I pray they don't use the same mechanics in AoE4.)

Compared to how great AoE2 was handled AoE1 is treated like an inbred relative.
