Path finding sucks, and still no unit formations?
I would have thought that this DE would have brought more intelligent path finding and the ability to set unit formations, but still, my units are running around like morons getting picked-off by ranged units and buildings. I really, sincerely hope this game gets an update to include more intelligent "ai"

If not, is there a mod out there that brings this to the game? I really liked the first AOE, but AOE2's superiority makes this game unplayable which is sad.

Noticed the same thing. Units would get stuck on eachother and for some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason they kept running back to a specific place after killing a unit, making any sort of attempt at managing economy impossible because I had to keep pressure up and constantly re-assign the attack command. Thankfully the AI resigned at the last second. Fishing boats would also try to cross land because technically a dock on the other side was the closest one.

But this is completely unacceptable. What the ♥♥♥♥ Microsoft?

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is not a remake of the original 1997 version. It is just remastered with upgraded graphics as well as a few specific changes to some things, such as the being able to walk on Farms now. Which is optional, you can remove that feature if you want. But the overall game is still the same, nothing has changed in it's game play. In 1997, pathfinding was horrible and it's still horrible. So what people had to do was learn how to manage smaller groups of units instead of massive groups like we're all used to in Age of Empires II. Smaller groups are easier to maneuver and set up ambushes or exploit the (stupidity) of the AI chasing after 1 unit only so you kite the unit it's chasing and use the rest of your units to kill the AI army. You work the problem. That is what was part of this game back in the day.

You want better pathfinding and formations, AoEII and AoEIII is available to play. This game is basically just a throw back to those who played this game back in the day or grew up playing this game.

A group of 20 hoplites is not a massive army. I can't even get 10 archers to stand together and perform any reasonable military tactic.

I got this game because I like this time in history. I've played AOEII DE to death already and I hate AOEIII with a passion especially more now that my mods I made don't work on the DE version.

I wish they'd make AOM2 which would be AOEII with myth/deities.

i agree with all of you , it's a shame. Don't know why MS leave the game in this situation.

What are you kids on about? This is Age of Empires 1. This is a remaster, not a remake and it runs on the same source code as the original. It is the original game with better graphics and some minor tweaks. It is what it is. It's a 1997 RTS for all intents and purposes. Play something newer then.

VIDAL. it should be 10 times better with some poor improvements, not all of them, from AoE II.
That's all. Units blocked with each other is not acceptable today also for a remastered.

Yes, the minor tweaks should have included more intelligent units. I mean honestly, would it have really made THAT much more work for them?

"Play something newer then" durr durr GO PLAY SOMETHING ELSE. I love it when morons like you have nothing better to say. I can imagine you running a company. Rather than changing for the better, you'd just fire people until nobody would want to work for you. Idiot.

Maybe they will make that, never know. I'm sure they'll probably come out with AoM: DE soon enough.

AoE: DE was just a blast from the past for a huge amount of people. To most, the original AoE was what got a lot of us into RTS games to begin with. I, for one, think they did a good job on the upgrade from original to DE. Yes I do agree they could have seriously overhauled quite a number of things, such as the pathfinding... but what can ya do? I love the pathfinding AoEII and III have. The formations they allow you to do give me a kind of peace of mind because I like being organized, lol... and when you send a group of 10 to 20 units together in AoE: DE, it's like playing Tetris and 20 pieces have just dropped and none of them can connect, so you're like... well crap! But you just work around it. The AI goes through this too. There are so many times I killed off the enemy's army, which was twice as large as mine, if not bigger... because of these ridiculous problems. You learn to work around them. That was the strategy in 1997, you really used the environment + the poor pathfinding to your advantage, lol. So going back into this, that's your mentality.

Oh and a group of 20 is a large group in AoE: DE. When the max you can group together is 36, 20 is a big group. Think about it... 36 max for AoE: DE and 60 max for AoEII: DE, huge difference. This game was extremely difficult to micro manage. You had to pay attention to what the heck you were doing. Was a death sentence leaving units here and there unattended, haha... oh boy... good times... goooooood times, lol. There is just no moment to chill and pay attention to detail about your base most of the time in this game that you get with II and III. And the weirdest part is for whatever reason, Easiest is harder than Standard, and sometimes my Hard matches were more difficult than my Hardest matches, lol. Idk, this game is seriously... I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M GOING TO EXPECT TODAY... type... and I like that. Keeps you on your toes still, JUST, as it did in the late 90's.

Slapping an HD package onto an 8-bit game seems a little silly to me, and maybe they should have called it AOE HD instead... I'd forgotten how horrible the pathing was until I picked it up again this week. Yes, walking on and reseeding farms is a nice feature to have now, but so much potential was lost when they stopped there. They could make a number of important improvements without making it a different-skinned AOE2. I would like to hope they reconsider this oversight/blunder (IMHO)... :steambored::steammocking:

I get yout point FTWO. I, myself, use to play AoE very differently from AoEII. Most of the times we can't go all guns blazing on this one and I'm ok with the way the game is cause it's very much the same of my childhood/teens (and what got me interested in RTS too) and it allows for a more slow-pacing game. Cheers!

To be honest one of the latest patches kind of made unit pathfinding worse because for some reason units started to become stuck inside each other.

i have this kind of problem mini map missing and cant do much in battle and if set up battle i cant change the settings on right side of screen has this game got bugs or something let me know
Weylin Feb 16, 2021 @ 5:36pm
Why is the pathfinding worse than the original?
Sure would be nice if I could go 10 seconds without half my units converging onto one spot and getting permanently stuck, to then conveniently all die to a stonethrower a moment later.

Absolutely rage-inducing
