Microsoft needs to do the right thing and give Steam keys to those who purchased it on the broken Windows Store; it does not have to be keys it can also be linking your Steam and Xbox account so there can be no abuse of key reselling.

But I am sick to death of having to re-buy Microsoft games after their fail on one of their platform and get new life on others.

As an example, I bought the Collectors Edition of AOE3, then I had to re-buy it if I wanted it digitally on my GFWL account; after that shut down I had to re-buy it once again on Steam. Paying 3x for the same damn game.
Same with Microsoft Flight Simulator X Deluxe and many others.

This is a disgusting practice, and needs to stop! :woodleenemy:

The answer is this: you chose to buy it on the Microsoft Store platform instead of waiting for it to come out on Steam. I didn't buy it on Microsoft Store because I don't want to give Microsoft even more of my computer than it already has for Windows and its malware-style update protocol that takes user choice out of the matter. So naturally, I waited for the Steam release. And I will continue to wait until the Steam release. At least AOEII:DE is coming in the fall, so I'll be able to join in that one. I'm happy about that.
but it WASN'T STATED that there would even BE a steam release. when it came out, it was assumed to be a windows store exclusive. i beta tested it, and that's where it came out( so that's my fault) but yeah, they gave us no reason to think that it would come out on steam.

A member of FE had an interview with German gaming magazine regarding AoE 1 DE and the Windows Store. They said that they wanted to release it on Steam but only on condition that Xbox Live will be added as the 3rd Party client. And Steam seemed to refuse that at that time.
Well, next time, vote with your wallet and refuse to spend on bad stores.

Still, people like myself as well who bought it on windows store should get it via a free key or something. I will not rebuy it then be expected to buy aoe 2 de as well.

They are in no way obligated to give you a free Steam key. If you care that deeply about having your games on Steam but find yourself unwilling to pay multiple times for the same game, you should have never bought it from the Microsoft Store to begin with.

On a more positive note, Microsoft made a new app that looks pretty sleek. Give that a shot.

Unfortunally my game which i own on the MS Store doesn't appear on this beta app, though rise of nation does. (but in the end it's the same, it uses the MS Store with "another face")

oh yeah, a magazine that i've literally never heard of... in a country i've never been to.....in a language i don't speak.... yeah they REALLY told me.

I wonder why this Interview wasn't quoted and translated.

Oh I forgot the name of that magazine.. it's called Gamestar
I hope so. MS gave people who bought the Java version of Minecraft a free key for the Win 10 version, and that game has far more players.

Yes but back then we didn't have a choice and if given one, I'm sure most people would have got it via steam, therefore it would be fair to give steam keys to all the people which own it on windows store.

We should get a free key, but it is Microsoft...

Not getting a steam key is the 'proper reward' for those supporting 'exclusive deal stores' as having a game 'confined' to a single store does nothing but ensure its quick demise especially by chaining its fate to questionable & unsustainable business models stores like M$/Epic
Other then Steam and GOG the life expectancy of these makeshift stores is probably less then 5years...
If anything u boys did the entire community a huge disservice... lucky enough there were too few of you to make M$ think that they can milk a large enough part of the community to make it a profitable move and then pull the plug on the game shortly after release just to force yr hand to buy the next game in the series regardless of how crappy it would be...remember the way they killed the game servers on the MSN zone just in time for Age 3 ?! this is the kind of crap M$ likes to do to its customers if left unchecked...
Guess what there are plenty of people that can't/don't want W10&M$tore shoved down their throats(i'm a linux user ever since Widows Vista(saw quick enough where things are headed and jumped ship-->best judgment call ive ever made in my life)) and would value above all the alternative of having any other OS as an option or at least a tool like Steam's Proton to allow anybody access to playing the game on any PC(meeting the hardware reqs) regardless of their choice of OS and for as long as they wish it for(don't think for an instance W10 isn't likely headed to scrap heap in the near future just like all the other winblows versions before it leaving u with a heap of uncompatible&unsuported games&software)
PS:moral of the story: think before u buy as it sadly affects countless others in ways u failed to realize both now and especially in the future. Some games may as well be considered art by now so don't be one of the arsewipes that tosses lit ciggys around and sets the musseum/library on fire leaving future generations staring at nothing but piles of ash...

While we haven't seen this for any game that were previously released only in MS Store, none of them has a huge fanbase like the Age of Empires community. Not providing Steam keys for this game is something that has a huge chance to provoke a large backslash, so hopefully Microsoft will provide keys this time if they want to avoid the negativity. They will still have profit: from players that haven't got the game back then and especially from AoE II Definitive Edition.
It's on sale right now from Microsoft for $14 if you can tolerate the Xbox app.

Why would you want to buy it there when its coming to Steam at any time now?

Plus this has nothing to do with this topic, as people here already own it on the Windows store but want it on Steam so they don't have to deal with that mess.

It's MS, no way this will ever happen. It's already a miracle they're releasing games on Steam again.
