Normally I run across the river and convert villagers from the yellow player. Even in the original game, it takes a good deal of speed and good use of the priest to avoid dying to red's axemen in the Stone Age while on the hardest difficulty.

On what difficulty are you playing? There are some bugs that make the AI be overly aggressive in some scenarios, even on the easier difficulties. There were some changes made to address these issues a while ago, but I think they still persist in some scenarios.

Finally managed to beat this scenario on standard, it was absolutely brutal.

Here's a long write up on how I did it:

I managed to beat it on easy.
built clubmen very quickly to deal with yellow.
then towers along the river.
then lots of swordsmen.

I haven't tried it yet with the Definitive version but I usually always beat it on hardest in the original.

Key is to walk your priest east all the way to the east side of the map and start converting the yellow villagers. You'll want to convert them ALL. Keep you priest converting as soon as his meter fills back up. While his meter is filling up you walk him with your next "victim" to keep him close so when it fills up you start chanting immediately.

Take your first villager and build a town center over on the small hill with a couple of stone piles. Have him start to gather wood. All villagers after that should gather food then make sure to get them gathering stone. You'll want to gather enough wood to build a granary and storage pit and at least 6 or 8 houses, then make sure you gather enough stone to build at least 4 watch towers once you reach tool age.

Once I've converted all of the yellow villagers I send my priest to the edge of the woods and build several houses around him. He can't move.... but axemen can't get to him either until they destroy the houses. He'll convert them usually before they can get to him.

The key is if you can survive to tool age, and have the stone available, you build 3 or 4 towers by the town center and you'll survive the attacks then.

1. Go east, convert villagers (Do it from a distance so you don't make them send all their villagers to kill your Priest: after a few conversations, save and then reload if your priest accidently dies)

2. In my experience, the western enemy liked to spam chariots and chariot archers. You have access to very little gold on your side, so you can turtle up by walling the river and laying down some watch towers and building ships to counter the chariot attacks.

3. Once your economy booms up, give him a taste of his own medicine by amassing your own chariots.

That ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mission man. No matter what I do, the Yellows always send me all their villagers to kill my priest. Doesn't matter if the village I try to convert is alone, or if I'm trying at max-range. They are acting like an hive-mind. God. That's some frustrating ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Pretty much this, when I was playing that mission I waited for the Yellow town center to build more Villagers and convert them so I can "double" the production of villagers (You have to leave villagers gathering food and convert the ones chopping wood or mining stone) then wall near the border with Houses and pray to survive the axemen/slinger rush. Then build walls/towers and spam chariots.

Oooooohhh I remember lots of good old rage quits in this particular scenario back in the days...:steamhappy: as mentioned, some random scenarios do appear to play on increased difficulty.

I am fan of Age of Empires 2 since Age of Kings, I have played all AOE2 campaigns, most of them many times, incliding the new definitive editon campaigns. However I am relatively new to AOE1, I used to play one or 2 campaigns ~15 years ago, and now I have bough DE in package with AOE2 DE.

I have already finished Greek campaign, and I have found it very easy. Then I started this campaign, and I then I stucked with this mission. It's extreme difficult even with easiest difficulty settings. First I tried to convert red villagers, I could convert one, then all their axemen came after my priest, but I could build a village with my one villager, and with many times saving I could defend myself for a time, however with fighting continously the red and the yellow, I failed to succeed. Then I realised, that I started to build at the wrong place. I looked at walkthroughs and many people suggested to convert many of the yellow villagers. I tried it multiple times, but I could covert only one or sometimes too. For most of the times even though I convert from the biggest possible distance, the villager reach me and kill me. After coverting the first one, they seem to be even more resistant.

At last I built my village to the northest part of the map, on the yellow side of the river. There is no gold or stone, but there are plenty of wood there. I could also fish and reach tool age with only one minor attack of yellow and no red attacks, then I could defend myself with a few axemen and scout ships at the west of my peninsula. Then I had many attacks from both enemies, but I could easily defend myself, while collection a lot of wood and food. I have also done some raids with my ships. Then I thoght it's easy now, and I have attacked the yellow with chairots and chairot archers, while blocked the ford with ships on the south. I didn't need to destroy all the yellow towers, with killing all the villagers, they stopped doing anything, so I could take my chairots against the red enemy. Then it became extremely difficult again. There were many chairots defending the base, and a lot of towers, and they kept on creating a lot of new chairots. Even though I also attacked with ships while attacking with chairots, I couldn't destroy any buildings, and as I had never had gold, I couldn't train stone thrower. After a lot of struggle, I couldn't do anything else, but I retreated to the ford to defend my side of the map. I started some axeman rushes against their towers, I could destroy 2 with a lot of effort. As it seemed that there are only very few trees left on both side, setting to very fast speed, I could wait and defend until they used all their resources(wood), and then in the end they could create only villagers and axeman, then I could crush the base with waves of axemen (in the end used most of my food for farming, as I also didn't have much).

I have played quite a few RTS games and I canhonestly say I have never seen a harder mission. How fast you convert is complete RNG and the red team gets to the bronze age before you ever start researching tool age. The standard difficulty is super bugged for this mission as all the yellow villagers will come and attack you when you start to convert no matter where you are. Are there any cheat codes so I can just skip this mission? Because it is really starting to piss me off.

A couple of tips to beat this one... When converting the yellow at the beginning do it to isolated ones and aim for when they are walking away from you or better still crouched over a deer or rock, also good to get the ones that start to build a dock BUT importantly do NOT destroy that dock, do let them finish it as later you will want to create your own nearby and trade food for gold with it to give you the strong units you will need. Couple of other things you need to get all those rocks at the right hand side, they are the scarcest resource so don't waste them" once you have a few guard towers around your village and a ideally a wall to stop the constant stream of attackers you need to keep red over the other side so you can claim all those precious trees so build a double wall at the river crossing on your bank and put two or three guard towers just back a little from it on your side. they will then expend chariots continuously against this wall. IMPORTANT TO SAVE SOME OF THAT STONE THOUGH AT LEAST 500 for end game. Now concentrate on mopping up the resources on your side of the river, get all the trees, make farms and a dock, trade food with the yellows for gold. Now you can build up a supply of strong units.. When you have all the tech go to the north of the map, build 4-5 war ships and take out their costal defences, ideally have a couple of priests convert units at the narrow points and send them off to create havoc, don't kill off their workers as they will hit population limit and this reduces the attacking force strength. When you are finally ready to mop them up you can send over a landing ship with a couple of stone throwers, couple of priests and some strong archer chariots to take on priests (red has lots of priests beware! you need to keep chipping away at them until they have no gold for more, its a war of attrition, protect your units, maybe build a town center over there and send cheap axemen at them for a while too.. took me 6 hours in the end..

I just beat it as well, so hard. I did two things:

1. Convert lonely yellow villager until AI has none and resigns.
2. Spam tower towards red
3. Build only camel rider because red builds mainly chariots

what i did was start converting yellow and prioritize getting enough food for the tool age. so gather those berries and build out fishing ships asap. You'll want a barracks up and some clubmen out (4 is enough) for the first red wave, after which you should upgrade to tool age asap, around the 11 minute game time mark (or 6 min real time on fastest game speed). Once in tool age, wall off and tower up the chokepoint connecting to the red base. build shipyard and scout ships so you can
