EDIT: I just checked and don't see a way to change it in the campaign scenarios. But you can change it in custom games.
For conquest mode I prefer 200, for default ("random map") mode I prefer 50.
Yes, that's what I personally am looking for in an Age of Empire. Still, the goal is to control a civilization not a group of mercenaries.
We have a winner. But if someone has more fun that way, then they should do it, it's singleplayer after all.
255 pop cap with half barrack unit pop cap usage would result in over 500 infantry potentially. Far before that point, you can put them all on attack move and go AFK to win the map.
Seems like the perfect compromise, as it wouldn't unbalance things: right now, you *can* build a 50-pop military by disbanding your entire Villager/Fisher/Trader/Transport population, with enough resources stockpiled to recruit more economy units if the attack fails. But it's not much fun, because restarting the economy would take ages. So separate caps would keep the existing balance, without damaging the fun factor.
I have an update.... at least it's an update to me..... if you do a single player custom game and don't choose a scenario but choose a large map or another size map (I forget all the sizes involved) you can choose your population limit. I think I'm caught up to you guys now. It's the campaigns and the scenarios where you can't go above 50 and that's well, sorta sucky BUT, I see the flip side to it as managing the population is like managing a resource. A governor or a mayor or heck a president or dictator would have to do the same thing. Do we have enough people to fight our enemies? draft 'em. Do we have enough workers? give businesses incentives (in AoE, upgrades) to give the workers more power to do their work faster and better. (incentives to hire). History in the playing. :) enjoy.
No, you can set the population cap anywhere from 25 to 250, in increments of 25. The only exception is in campaign missions, which retain the old 50 limit.
