Population limit at 50
Hello, I'm new to the game, is it normal that the maximum population in game is 50 and not 200?

Yes, that is the default. You can change it under options (at least you can for custom games... not sure about the campaign scenarios...)

EDIT: I just checked and don't see a way to change it in the campaign scenarios. But you can change it in custom games.

50 and 200 games play very differently because in the former you need to make very hard choices between villagers and military units, whereas in the latter you just spam either.

For conquest mode I prefer 200, for default ("random map") mode I prefer 50.

What I would love for a mod or option to raise the pop cap in campaign missions.

I think campaigns would be broken if their pop cap will be higher as they were designed for 50 pop.

I've played the original modded for 255 pop cap and yes it does indeed hugely imbalance the campaigns into the player's favor, but keep in mind that it's single-player and I like to play those very casually where I just sit back and defend while building up a large army to do one big attack 2 hours later. Doesn't really work with a head count so arbitrarily small like 50.

Yes, that's what I personally am looking for in an Age of Empire. Still, the goal is to control a civilization not a group of mercenaries.

Surely there's some kind of tweak/hack to increase this limit for campaigns. They should add an option to customize it on an update. Changes the gameplay for everyone, NPC civilizations will attack more often with larger armies like AOE II.

Just make sure to buy the thing in the government center that reduces the population cost of units from the barracks so that 50 is a bit more in practice.

We have a winner. But if someone has more fun that way, then they should do it, it's singleplayer after all.

255 pop cap with half barrack unit pop cap usage would result in over 500 infantry potentially. Far before that point, you can put them all on attack move and go AFK to win the map.

so I see no one gave an advice on how to increase the population limit in the campaign. At least at 100 so we can control a civilization and not a group of mercenaries like a mate mentioned above...

The missions are designed for that 50 pop cap though so chances are the AI won't be able to keep up with you in the campaign.

I'd at least appreciate the option to have a separate cap for economic and military units in the campaign.

Seems like the perfect compromise, as it wouldn't unbalance things: right now, you *can* build a 50-pop military by disbanding your entire Villager/Fisher/Trader/Transport population, with enough resources stockpiled to recruit more economy units if the attack fails. But it's not much fun, because restarting the economy would take ages. So separate caps would keep the existing balance, without damaging the fun factor.

o.k. then, to be straight, in AOE DE, there isn't a way to increase the population limit in a single player game that you set up to play the computer. Single Player>Custom Game. I'm like "259" above, build up a GOOD economy (and I'm good at that) and then, build up a good Army and Navy and just rip the DICKENS outta the computer AI when I'm ready. I challenge myself from easy to moderate, etc from time to time but mostly pass the time with easy so I can play a little bit of "sim city" along with AOE at the same time. So, to be straight, no way, nadda, nothing, can't increase the population limit unless you're playing an on line game and that takes an actual layer on line even if you set it up for a computer as the opposition?

I have an update.... at least it's an update to me..... if you do a single player custom game and don't choose a scenario but choose a large map or another size map (I forget all the sizes involved) you can choose your population limit. I think I'm caught up to you guys now. It's the campaigns and the scenarios where you can't go above 50 and that's well, sorta sucky BUT, I see the flip side to it as managing the population is like managing a resource. A governor or a mayor or heck a president or dictator would have to do the same thing. Do we have enough people to fight our enemies? draft 'em. Do we have enough workers? give businesses incentives (in AoE, upgrades) to give the workers more power to do their work faster and better. (incentives to hire). History in the playing. :) enjoy.

No, you can set the population cap anywhere from 25 to 250, in increments of 25. The only exception is in campaign missions, which retain the old 50 limit.
