The Long Drive

The Long Drive

What exactly is this game?
I get that it's an open world driving sim in an apocalyptic desert, but...what exactly do you do?

The description says minimal survival aspects, so what is there? Do you scavenge? To what end? Is there like a hunger/thirst meter forcing you to find food? Is it the type of game where you drive from POI (point of interest) to POI to pick them clean on the 500km trip? Are there stories to find? Are there NPCs to talk to? I read about the rabbits, so I guess that covers "enemies". I also understand it's early access and not finished/subject to change.

I'd try the game to see for myself but I don't have time right this second, so I thought I'd see what I could get from posting the question. Any serious answers are appreciated.

To what end? To push on the 5000 km drive. There is no proper ending to the game.

YES
Are there stories to find? NO

I read about the rabbits, so I guess that covers "enemies" Yes but they are optional, hell, everything is optional in the game. Including survival elements.
I also understand it's early access and not finished/subject to change.
Yes it's extremely janky (read my review if you want to)

I appreciate the response, though honestly even though it does specifically answer my questions I don't think it gets to the root of my main question of 'what is this game?'

If 'everything is optional including survival elements'...what does the game become then? Drive in a straight line simulator? If you can scavenge, is it just for food? Is there any kind of crafting or maybe car parts you're collecting or something like that?

you scavenge for car parts, gas, oil, tires, water, food, as well as materials to clean the car. the controls are intentionally wonky and clunky. The game is a great way to kill time. To get an idea of the game you should watch some youtube videos of it. For starting out i'd suggest turning off the hunger and thirst. Also the quality of the tires greatly affect the vehicle handling. also turn on the car radio to not feel so lonely on the road.

The official youtube channel has streams, it's a good starting point. Or just buy it and play for 2 hours, then refund if you don't like it.

I think what he's really asking is what your purpose is in game, or are you basically just wandering around for the sake of wandering around.

Just drive, get food and water and don't die or have your car evaporated or skid into the backrooms

My problems with these kinds of questions is that they are pointless. If he's really interested he can:
1 watch videos
2 buy and refund
3 p*rate
It's much more effective than asking questions. Also lurking on the forum is more helpful than this. Don't expect to get spoonfed with information, if you're interested lurk more.

Actually, the only ineffective question is the question that goes unasked.
If you don't want to answer, then don't answer, Fer. Being bothered that someone is asking for hands on accounts is a problem with you, not the OP.

Drive and survive, basically. Turn on some tunes with the radio and let your worries melt off, as you pray there will be a gas station soon. Great atmosphere, and I do suggest buying.

This game is for me about the survival on the road alone, you must think about what you do and do it the best way. This game is the best way to get out of the boring timess!

Wait, the survival elements are optional? I just wanna drive about catching the scenery. Maybe would pick it up if on sale soon.
Jdwarfer Dec 20, 2023 @ 6:04am
There's not much to see on the scenery tbh.
It's more about driving old vehicles, funny physics, simple gameplay and mechanics.
For me it's more entertaining than it seems to be, considering the lack of objectives, story and events.
The diversity of vehicles, what you need and can do to them, searching for parts in POIs, defending yourself against enemies (optional), along with silly physics and graphics, is what make this game special to me. It might looks like a crapy game made by someone who doesn't know what he's doing but, it feels right for some reason.
I've played similar games that are maybe done "better", like more polished, but they suck IMO.
The only drawback ATM is that we're waiting for an update for quite some time... It must be huge, I hope.

It's been a while since you asked the question and I don't really see a real answer to it. You start in a house, there's a letter from your grandma I think saying she wants to see you, so you put your car in working order, pack some stuff for the road (oil, water, food, weapons, car parts, etc..) go on the road and drive. There's one road that goes from point A to point B, it has turns, ups and downs, etc.. it's not a straight road. There's point of interests to stop and loot for food/water if needed, prob some ammo, fuel, oil, parts, cleaning material, etc.. You might encounter enemies, like rabbits or weird crazy people. No stories, not npc to talk too. Just a long road where you maintain or change vehicles, keep yourself afloat until you reach the end of the road, the survival aspect isn't even that intense, you can store a lot of water and a lot of food, the meters depletes slowly, there's a lot of food and water to find too. Your biggest enemy is gonna be the wonky physics
