However, if you're going to be gone for an extended period of time, I imagine it could be better than nothing. At least for me, Ronin class and Oni religion was the best combination, along with the werewolf staff. Between the "blood magic" revive from the Oni religion and the HP boost from killing enemies, and the auto-revive from the Ronin class, I could leave my hero going for a long time without having to check in.
I've read online that if you can get a master blacksmith, he can then use the forge to upgrade the +2 hammer, and that essentially makes you invincible. However, I'm not at that point yet.

The training halls (I usually run 2 simultaneously) make it so the beserker is always killing 2 enemies per hit even at 50k+ enemies per tile, literally cutting the capture time in half. The basic sword gets +2% speed per upgrade.
Its also best to run 2 academies at a time so that you arent waiting for one to finish. This is best to wait to do until you've unlocked international trade, then just straight up buy the stone to build the second academy instead of waiting for the resources.
My tile setup for lets say 25 times is usually. 2 wheat, 1 forest, 1 quarry, 4 temples, 4 cathedrals, 2 academies, 2 training yards, 1 forge, 1 harbor, and 7 theatres (this should be the first building you go for on the empire points, it makes it so much easier imo)
I usually keep this setup, just increasing schools until I'm at about 34 tiles where I up my fields and forests to 4 each and my quarries to 2, and then around 50 I go up to 6 fields 8 forests and start pushing the coastline to get the harbors as well.
This. Unless you're intentionally trying to "challenge" yourself, there's no reason to stay on a continent. It's much more efficient to just sail away ASAP.
Here are some number to prove the point: a tile with 35,000 enemies takes AT LEAST 9 hours to complete (that's assuming the best-case scenario where you're always one-shotting two enemies at once with the berserker). What do you get out of that in the long run? Just 5 amber and 1 fame (+3% abdication gold on FUTURE CONTINENTS). On the other hand, if you sail away to a new continent, 9 hours could easily get you 10+ tiles, that's 50+ amber, 10 fame AND probably an extra empire point (or at least 2/3 of an empire point depending on your tile count when you sail).
Sail away!

Now if you're dead-set on filling up the continent for whatever reason, there's not much you can do so early to improve combat speed other than training halls. Most things that can really speed combat up is beyond your reach. Depending on what your playing schedule is and your build preferences, resetting your empire points to go all Japanese *may* help, that's about it.
What about amber? I have 432 amber, was gonna save up for the 999 upgrade but I guess spending some in production% is probably gonna speed it up more than waiting for another 570 amber..
