General Battle Strategies, tips?

I've explored with the skills system, equipment, grinding a bit, etc, and I get to the first boss in the volcano area and basically it's a long drawn out party wipe after what seems like forever (with various 'delay' glitches due to bugginess with using recovery/revival items, or instances where Nep gets hit with some sleep attack at 0 HP and I have to fast forward a while before the game 'catches up').

The guide currently out there (not knocking it, just very little info other than HP for boss fights) currently doesn't have any sort of strategy, but it just seems unfair to have the first boss with 2.6k HP with guards at 600 something, and your attacks at best (I think I'm around level 6 or so) do like 100 or 200 damage roughly, when each character is taking a beating, and that's with DLC items/characters as well.

Do I just need to grind more to 'get gud', or is there more to the strategy/fighting aspect, especially with the earlier bosses?
