FAQ

What is “The Great Perhaps” about?

“The Great Perhaps” tells the story of an astronaut returning to Earth destroyed by natural cataclysms. There, among the ruins, he finds an unusual artifact — an old lantern, in the light of which you can see glimpses of another time and travel to the past. Naturally, he decides to save the world from the apocalypse with the help of this lantern. Is he going to succeed? You’ll find out after you play the game!

Who made “The Great Perhaps”?

The game was created by Caligari Games, an independent Russian studio based in Moscow. Our small team has been working on “The Great Perhaps” for about a year and a half, and this is actually our first project ever.

How did you come up with the name for the game?

It is believed that the last words of a famous French poet Francois Rabelais were: “I go to seek a great perhaps”. We’ve had a couple of other ideas before we finally decided on the name, but this one seemed to fit the story perfectly. Plus, it sounds cool and mysterious.

What was the inspiration behind the aesthetic of “The Great Perhaps”?

If you look at our game, you’ll surely notice that it was heavily inspired by Soviet aesthetics. As we are a Russian studio, in our first project we wanted to reflect the beauty of what surrounds us every day and what shaped us in many ways. Although none of us actually lived in the Soviet Union, our main source of inspiration were numerous Soviet mosaics that still adorn almost all cities in Russia. The original idea of this story originated from a place in Bulgaria called the monument of Buzludzha, which already looks like it survived an apocalypse. We used it as a basis for one of the locations in our game, but it doesn't mean that the events take place in Bulgaria.

Why is the AI called L9?

The name of L9, the second protagonist of the game, is a reference to Aldous Huxley's novel "Brave New World". In the novel there’s a character named Lenina, and her name also happens to be a reference to Vladimir Lenin, who, as you can imagine, is a very important figure in the history of Russia. So, this is why we ended up choosing this name.

What engine did you use to make the game?

“The Great Perhaps” is made with Unity, since it’s a very popular and accessible engine. Maybe one day we’ll make our own engine, but for now we’re using what already exists and works well.

On which platform will TGP be released?

“The Great Perhaps” is currently available only on PC, but we’re always looking into new possibilities to open up The Great Perhaps for as much players as possible.

What languages are available in the game?

The game has full English and Russian voiceover, as well as subtitles in the following languages: English, Russian, Ukrainian, Spanish, French, German, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Japanese. We hope to reach as many gamers as possible.

Is your game anything like “The Silent Age”?

The only thing our game has in common with “The Silent Age” is the time travel mechanics and the name beginning with “The”. In every other aspects, “The Great Perhaps” is very different, since it’s more of a puzzle-platformer, whereas “The Silent Age” is a point-and-click quest. There’s also a lot more action in our game, so the experience is definitely not the same, although we love “The Silent Age”!

How can I contact you?

You can reach out to us through our website: https://www.caligarigames.com/

Does the game have gamepad support?

Yes, it does! You can use any gamepad you like to play “The Great Perhaps”. The first time you start the game, you will be offered to enable gamepad support. Or you can switch to gamepad through in-game settings at any time.

Where can I find the soundtrack from “The Great Perhaps”?

The soundtrack will soon be available on Steam as well as on other platforms which will be announced further.

Are you planning on making a sequel?

Right now we’re working on another project, but it’s possible that we’ll get back to our astronaut and L9 sometime in the future!
