Some Rules Clarifications: Playing Additional Cards and Game End

Hi there!

I've noticed a few rules that people seem unclear on, and are mistakenly thinking the game has a bug when in fact the game is correct and is playing by the rules. I'll post two here but feel free to add more in this thread:

The first is that not all combat cards can be played during the "Play an additional card" phase in combat. Only cards that specifically say they can be added on after cards are revealed may be played at this point, ie Heimdall's Eye. So no, just because you're holding onto a +5 STR card, it cannot be used during "Play an additional card".

The reason that all players are offered the chance to play an additional card, whether they are holding a valid special card or not, is because if the game only asked people who were holding a special card, it would obviously reveal that information to other players.

This is all found on Page 18 of the rules.

The second point I see is that people are saying the game ends suddenly even though they still had rage to spend. As per Page 14 of the rules, the action phase ends when all players are out of rage OR when all provinces have been successfully pillaged. All players may have tons of rage left, but if you're in Phase 3 and the last available province is pillaged, the game is immediately over.

I think those are two of the biggest ones people mention indeed. Good post.
Third one would probably be "I won a pillage but didn't get the rewards!"
Only the player who initiates a pillage gets the pillage reward, others winning only get glory.

Good point! Yeah, "defenders" never get the pillage reward, only the person who initiates the fight and of course only if they're successful.

I actually responded to an angry post about that second point and explained the rule. He must have been embarrassed because the post was deleted. Unfortunate because then other people couldn't benefit from his asked question. There should probably be a sticky-ed post of common rule-related pitfalls for new players.
