Prototype

Prototype

*Working* Resolution Fix
UPDATE 12/30/2015:
The original download is no longer hosted at wsgf.org. I've updated the Steam guide with the most recent file link (provided by Shaidon). Click here for the guide:

This fix actually worked for me under Win7, whereas the others I found did not. Go to http://www.wsgf.org/dr/prototype and look under the Solutions & Anomalies section. From there, download "Prototype_All_Res.zip."

Backup "prototypeenginef.dll" and replace it with the file inside the zip. The original file is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Prototype. This will set your game resolution to whatever your Desktop is set to. You won't be able to change your video settings ingame anymore, but you can always set your AA and AF through the Nvidia Control Panel.

Wow, this is exactly what was wrong. Good work on the find.

I was super excited to play this, got myself all hyped up for it before I left for work and left it downloading to play when I got back, and the first thing it did when I started it up was absolutely freeze up my comp and give me a black screen that slowly faded to white then to blue. Couldn't get out of it with any keyboard commands, had to restart every time I tried to play it.

Tried a dozen different solutions like forcing it to run in 600x400 or w/e, reinstalled it 7 or 8 times, nothing worked. But swapping out the prototypeenginef.dll file from Prototype_All_Res.zip download fixed it right up. Put the old one on my desktop (I'll be deleting it shortly), copied the new one in, and it worked like a charm.

I don't know if anyone else had this exact same issue as me (it seemed to be a rarity on the interweb), but if you're getting a black screen that fades and completely halts your system, don't worry, this is the fix. This game isn't trash, as some people are saying; actually, now that I got it working I've played it for nearly 5 hours ha (I'm running win7 on an AMD 8 core 3.1ghz, 8g ram, an AMD radeon 7870 card, all on an older flatscreen monitor btw so my comp specs can easily handle it, I thought maybe the resolution was an issue, but replacing the .dll file worked just fine).

PS ignore that warning about not being able to change your video settings in game. I totally forgot about making sure they're on high and did it in the middle of a mission. No biggie.
Glad the fix worked for you. Prototype is such an underrated game.

Thanks for posting this!
Posting if only to provide a bump. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I searched for an HOUR on Google and tried four different solutions and NONE of them worked. Guess I should try Steam forums first next time I have an issue, brilliant.
Glad it worked for you! I've just put this up as a guide so that perhaps people find it more easily.
hey im having the framerate drop during the confrontations with enemies during any battle. it just doesnt pick back up after it drops. the longer the battle lasts the slower the framerate gets. really irritating. i have to get through a confrontation and save immediately. as soon as i start back up on the game its all better until battle time. is this the fix that will solve that issue as well? running windows 7x64 nvidiagtx650 I-5 3350 3.1 8gb ddr3 ram 800+ gb of free hard disc space. is this the same fix for my issue?
It's possible that it may help you. I never experienced an issue like that, so I can't say for sure.
are you using a contoller such as the Xbox 360 afterglow? or are you playing with the keyboard and mouse? i dont want to give up my gamepad if i dont have to but if thats the problem then S.O.B that sux...
Nope, I'm a keyboard & mouse kinda guy, so I can't really say if your problem could be caused by controller issues or not because I have no way to test that myself.

Try unplugging your controller, *reboot* your computer, then run Prototype without the controller plugged in and see if that makes any difference in performance.
