This fix helped me run the game
http://www.gamespot.com/prototype/forum/all-prototype-sound-issues-fixed-here-50201553/

This fixed the problem with cinematics, gameplay, etc. Runs the way it should have in the first place.

I'm glad I checked the forums for this on a whim. I was getting popping nasty sound but if there's a hack, I'll take it if it fixes that.

Having to hack games to get them to work when there's lack of support isn't new by the way.. Look at Borderlands 1 and having to get a different .DLL just to get around not having an SSE instruction set on your cpu :P

EDIT: And.. 404. Anyone have an updated link to this fix?

Go into your Device Manager (Control Panel > Device Manager) and start disabling devices with 'HID' in them under the section "Human Interface Devices" If your keyboard or mouse stops working, re-enable the one that you think caused it. It takes a bit of experimenting, but it fixes it.

It didn't. Still waiting for a forward to this fix mentioned above.

Here is what the forum post says:

Firstly if you have chipmunks-sounding voices and distorted video and sound in CUTSCENES(not web of intrigue or vidoes like the beginning movie) :
Make sure your sound does not exceed 48000 Hz(regardless of the frame rate). Try 44100 Hz. To do this you must go to your speakers properties and select advance tab and set it. An easy way to do this is by right-clicking on the sound icon in the icons tray and select playback devices.

Secondly if your sound is too low:
Now that you have set the correct settings you may find the sound is a little too low.
If it is just download the SOUND PATCH :- http://www.divshare.com/download/7719256-2aa
Then you just copy and paste the file into the installed directory E.g. C:/Program files/Activision/Prototype
Be sure to have a backup of the original file before replacing just in case.

Thirdly if you have a problem with crackling/slow cut scenes:
Go to your control panel and then go to Hardware and sound and select the DEVICE MANAGER. (If you don't know how to get there just use windows help and support)
When you are in the device manager find the HUMAN INTERFACE DEVICES. In the drop-down menu there should be some useless HID devices you can disable. Disable the devices by right clicking on them and selecting 'disable'. Which ones to disable is Trial and error.
Most of these devices you do not need anyway and i assure you it wouldn't harm your PC. Just make sure you don't disable your mouse(if it is a USB device)...............If you are having this problem then Prototype is most likely running way slower than it should(Even on a gaming PC)...Trust me i have the Toshiba X300 Qosmio gaming laptop(the flaming red one)
When you disable the useless HID devices you will be able to run Prototype FASTER THAN EVER!!

Hope one of these work for you.

I had low framerate (caused by HID drivers) and low sound. I plugged in an XBOX controller. I still play with KB+M, but the HID drivers no longer need to be disabled as long as the controller is plugged in. It fixed it!

I had low volume as well, which was fixed with this patch: http://dl.gamecopyworld.com/?c=725495341&d=2009&f=Prototype_Sound_Normalize_Patcher_By_KelSat!rar

8 years later, but thank you. This was really helpful. Can't believe how unplayable this game was.
