How to Play Prototype 1 in 2023 and Beyond
Gonna make this short and simple.
If you're using a processor that uses more than 4 cores, then your game is going to crash during the first loading screen after you select new game.

To prevent this, type msconfig into the Windows search bar and your system configuration will pop up. Go to Boot, Advanced Options, check the box for Number of Processors, select 4, hit okay, apply, then restart your system.

Once you've restarted, launch the game like normal, start a new game, and you're golden.

Enjoy!

Not the best idea, that way tour entire PC will only use 4 cores, including in other games. Better to use the specific program that limits the number of cores for certain application!

Yes, I would also like to know which program would you recommend, as I would rather like to avoid using only 4 cores for everything. Thanks!

Game does run on 6 cores. You just have to temporarily change the affinity of the Steam.exe and launch the game through Steam. Or you create a shortcut that sets the affinity before it launches. No additional software required.

Yeah that doesn't sound like a good idea. I don't wanna cripple my rig for 1 game.

Crash after starting or loading a game • Link

The game may crash on a CPU with more than 8 threads.

Create Steam shortcut with limited core affinity[11]

Create a new shortcut
Set the shortcut target to cmd /C start "steam" /affinity 0xff "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe"

I used similar approach but I found a video explaining how to do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mclq8441oJ0 it's for prototype 2 but also works for 1.

It is rediculous that even current AAA games sometimes don't start up correctly and we as users have to go in and tweek our systems. But, when it works it is a beautiful and wonderful feeling. I have a $4000 rig, i9, 128GB RAM, RTX 4090 24GB , plus I allocate additional memory to every game just to help them out. The Harry Potter game would not open without allocating 40GB additional RAM. Anyhow, this worked perfect and thanks. Now, I can buy other older game like the Protoype 2.. awesome. And have a great day.
