Worth paying for Oblivion to play Nehrim?
I've never played Oblivion (way outdated by today's standards) but I have Skyrim and have played Enderal which was awesome.

So is Nehrim a good enough add-on/mod to pay the $20 for the base Oblivion game?

Which Oblivion features make you think it's outdated? Personally I think it holds up pretty well compared to other "classic" RPG games. Nehrim plays like the best parts of the base Oblivion. So if one already thinks Oblivion is a good game, they are gonna be enchanted by Nehrim.

If you have to convince yourself, it's probably not a good idea to spend any money.

I bought Oblivion 3 times - on release, the original GOTY version and Deluxe in 2020.

The only thing outdated about Oblivion is graphics. The gameplay is identical to Morrowind, Skyrim, Fallout 3/NV/4. They're all basically the same game with different coats of paint.

So my answer to the OP is: No. If you think Oblivion is outdated, don't buy it to play a mod that is literally just as outdated.

You dont have to pay 20 bucks for Oblivion. You can get it much cheaper elsewhere. And yes, its worth it. Oblivion may not be for everyone anymore but its still a good game. Nehrim is Oblivion, but much much better and intense. If you dont like the graphics at all, then I would recommend to not buy Oblivion for Nehrim, because the same engine is used here.

I've been thinking of getting Oblivion on a couple of occasions but always something else took it's place and now it's years later. To clarify my "Outdated"statement I was referring to Oblivion's release date of 2009 and this being 2020 the gaming/graphics industry has come a long way. I wasn't sure if the base Oblivion game would bring the dated aspects into the Nehrim mod.

I do have Fallout3/NV/4 which I loved and also Skyrim whiich released in 2011. I played the Enderal mod with great satisfaction but since I don't have Oblivion I was looking for a little scale tipping so to speak this would be on a par level and finally give me the push even though it's older.

It does seem strange though Enderal is the sequel to Nehrim but came out on steam first? I'm guessing since Enderal was for Skyrim and Nehrim is for Oblivion the story lines are totally different although game play is similar.

Thank you all for the responses. Between them all I've culled enough information where I believe I'll get an enjoyable and worthy experience.

@ Xenophobe Good idea. Thanks.

I would also advise just waiting for a sale. The game needs time to be patched, also.

You can probably get a key cheaper somewhere, though. cd-keys or instantgaming, places like that.

Firstly, Oblivion was released in 2006 and I believe Nehrim in 2010. They use the same engine and mostly the same resources (textures, meshes, etc.) and Nehrim does very little to make Oblivion look any better than it used to.

I can't figure out what else you would consider "dated." If anything, Oblivion is deeper, more involved, and more complex than Skyrim. Morrowind was the same to Oblivion. The games have actually been simplified for wider audiences, if that's what you consider "modernization."

wait for the summer sale in 2 weeks DEFINITLY. dont give bethetic money they dont derserve anymore. oblivion is dirt cheap during these sales. 20 is way too much for a nearly 15 year old game.

to answer the question about nehrim directly :

if you never played nehrim then yes. absolutly worth it due to handplaced and handmade openworld map. not random leveled ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ system. that alone makes nehrim > oblivion by a mile. nehrim is still better than skyrim aswell even today. maybe not technical wise but in everything else pretty much.

if you played nehrim before on non steam version : definitly not worth it. there is literally no changes to the content/gameplay compared. paying extra for that is not worth it.

Honestly while the main gameplay (fighting) is on par with skyrim some other parts are clunky like to lev mercantile properly you need to sell items induvidual and that how mutch you barter and/or sell items for don´t matter. Selling 100 iron arrows 1 by 1 gives 100 times more mercantile xp then selling super ultra armor for 5000. But money is no issue so no need to rly care about speech/mercantile skill.

Also the oblivion levling system is partly still there. The number of attribute increases you gain is based on what skills you increased during the lev and becuse levling up is not tied to skills you can theoretically get 3x +5 attribute ups evry level. If you don´t care about min/max or powergame the systems it dosent matter that mutch becuse aslong you get 3x +2 thats good enuff (skill up 3 skills by 1)

TL:DR Its Oblivion with some nice changes but if you can´t stand Oblivion don´t think this 2011 mod will change your view. Voice is in German aswell so...
