How is it compared to Gothic / Elex ?
Iam a huge Gothic fan. Never cared about AAA games, becouse they all lacked the soul and atmosphere that a Gothic game could give, even if they were buggy at times.

Elex was fine, but not on a gothic level. HOwever i can sense many similarities between those games and Outcast. Handcrafted world design (at least what i saw, it seems like it), very open world with non-linearity, jetpack (elex), fantasy-sci-fi fusion (elex) and a very oldschool combat which i always loved (gothic-elex).

But... i can be mistaken and they are not alike. Any Gothic fan here to enlighthen me? What about quests? Are those fetch quests or really good mystery quests with no handholding like in Gothics?

I love PB games, from Gothic to Risen to Elex, I had a blast on all of them (Some more than others of course).

Yes they are janky as hell but I always end up having good fun with there games despite the jank, they also have alot of charm and are just good old school fun imo.

I am also curious how much this game is like PB games.

It's simple. If you played and liked the original Outcast/1.1 then you'll like A New Beginning. However you may not like the current retail price...waiting for a sale myself. I'm not rich :)

Not played the old Outcast, but as the thread starter mentioned, we enjoy the janky Euro rpgs that PB has made (Gothic, Risen, Elex). We are curious how this game compares to those?

It's eurojank and open world, but not an RPG.

Yes, less RPG, no role playing and decisions but better in most other ways (says a fan of Gothic 1,2 and Elex 1). Storytelling and wordbuilding is as dense and good as you can hope for. There's some open world distraction stuff but it works. You like PB's game worlds? This one will do it.

I also loved Gothic 1-3 and Outcast (which is not an rpg, it is an action adventure). The new Outcast is still an action adventure but has some lite rpg elements like upgrading your jetpack and shield, modifying the guns with mods and level those up. Also love the new one. Both are different genres, but have a great world to explore and NPC to talk to as well. The jetpacking here is also much better than in elex 2 (did not finish it).

I also played all the Gothic/Elex games.
This is close enough to me, plenty of dialogue and secrets to find.

It's one part Elex and one part Farcry 3/Just Cause (just without the "climb a tower to reveal the map" nonsense and other ubicrap gameplay mechanics), and feels a bit like Serious Sam with the running-and-gunning combat and vaguely cynical and jaded protagonist.

I bought it pre-release and it's worth the $40-ish USD I paid for it.

Oh, thank you guys, as i never played Outcast 1, the trailer seemed like a very much gothic-style sci-fi rpg for me, but its not an rpg... But i guess, i will still try it out, the worldbuilding is always a no.1. feature.

However, if it would resembles just ONE BIT to far cry, i would dump it in one sec. The endless , soulless, copy-paste fetch outpost clearing-questing with no human input, just random generated junk all the way in the map is the epicentre of the dying AAA gaming industry...

Thx anyway for the infos :D

It is an action game, not a true RPG. But it has a really beautiful world.

I played Outcast in 1999 and also ALL the gothic games... (I love this serial...).
NO, it's not the same games... Sadly this game (outcast) reminds of the "video games" of today : it's nice looking , it roughly play well, but the story and the missions are boring.
YES, it's not "FEDEX" missions per say, but it's pretty boring. That and the optimisation... :-(. I'm playing on xbox serie X.
And the price tends to lure you that it's a "AAA game". it's not...
And I'm saying this as an avid buyer of Indie games, because you can't find new ideas nowadays in big studios..... For me, this game would have be better with 3 months of debugging... But we'll get there after few patches?!!! Sadly , you can't change the story....

This isn't really like either. I hope the Gothic remake is good. The original had some good stuff going for it and I could see how an remake could be better if done with care.

It's a less janky PB game tbh.
