Why is the mini-map blinking blue?

There's a blue ring blinking around the mini-map. What's it indicating? Did I miss a tutorial hint of some kind?

Also, the name and description of the current mission (A New Beginning) is wasting screen space on the left side. Any way to turn that off?

The mini-map shows you are on top of whatever your current mission objective is. If you have it you can press X use the scanner to check in you field -o-vision where it is you have to go or have to interact with.

It shows you the objective location. If you want to turn that (and the info box on the left side) off, open the quest menu and unselect the quest (you can still do the quest, even when not selected).
