"Shadow map resolution" grayed out, locked to medium
As the title of this thread says, I have shadow map resolution setting locked on medium, and boy, this game could use bigger shadow maps. Any known way to unlock bigger shadow maps that you know of?

Hmm, interesting. Do you have an nvidia or ati/amd graphics card?

Back when the game came out, some of the graphics features were nvidia-only. I think with updated drivers the ATI cards could do the extra effects too. (Back then nvidia's rival were were known as ATI rather than AMD.) It's possible that more recent AMD drivers have broken the compatability that was added in some old drivers.

Nvidia, latest beta driver. One way or the other game always tells me my drivers need to be updated.

Messed up with the config file for a bit, and it seems that setting the shadow map resolution string value higher than the default (which is 1) only makes the game use lower resolution shadow maps, with hideous results. For all I know there might not be higher res shadow maps in the game files at all, which is a shame really - all those dynamic shadows with a higher res would make the game look way better.

Set the quality to 0 and the shadows will be a lot better. Make sure you don't alter the graphics settings in-game (after applying this config tweak) or the setting will reset to "1" whether you set it to read-only or not.

Sweet, thank you kindly for that tweak. I was also wondering why the shad. map was greyed out stuck at med. Speaking of settings, the 1st time I fired the game up to test it out I completely missed the advanced graphic options altogether *DOH!*

In the rare case someone stumbles upon this thread, here are a few recommendations to ensure you optimize your experience with TimeShift:

1.) https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/TimeShift
This site is mandatory for just about any PC game, and with TimeShift you get some cool tips and tweaks like how to implement SGSSAA (Sparse Grid Super-Sampling A.K.A. incredible, awesome anti-aliasing!)

2.) The steam ver. of TimeShift is *not up to date*. The download for patch 1.2 can be found at the link I provided (No worries, it's clean. Installed with no problems)

Why rare? Timeshift is the perfect poor man HL2 clone (along with Singularity), with time instead of gravity :p
