Play online with friends not working

I assume it means "Steam friends"? No matter what we do, we never appear in each other's games as an option to join. We are playing from the same LAN, if that matters.
* I host, any combination of settings, other computer sees no rooms.
* Other computer hosts, any combination of settings, I see no rooms.
* We can see each other in our Steam friend lists playing TRDS. There is no invite option.
The only way we can find each other is if I host a public server and then on the other computer we click Join and try to find my server in the list real quick.

Is there some secret voodoo for adding friends in this game?

I'm seeing the same issue. It worked a few weeks ago but we cannot find friend games now, even if the friends are all visible online in steam and we all have the same region selected.
