How is the Battle System
Hi there thinking of getting this. I read that you can use field of glory 2 to play out these battles if you like. But how is the battle system in this game by itself. Is it not that good, thats why you want to export your games to FOG2?

Also so when you export battle to FOG2, then after battle does it take you back to this game and you continue with your campaign?

The battle system is perfectly servicable, but it's just an autoresolver. I think it's fine; you generally don't want to simulate each and every battle in FOG2 anyways - you'd never finish your campaign that way!

I for one use the FOG2 simulations for very decisive battles, and otherwise autoresolve.

Hello, the game can transition from a FOGE battle to FOG2 for tactical combat with no problem. Afterward, the resolution plugs into FOGE and you continue your campaign. You can't use FOG2 in MP, or for naval battles, or for assaults and you probably won't want to spend a half an hour fighting every battle in FOG2. I like the nuances of the in-game system. Leadership, supply, exhaustion, unit experience and equipment, terrain and frontage all factor into a complex abstract battle system worth mastering. My personal opinion is that some players exploit FOG2 to win every battle through the "time out" rule. So I have played entirely without FOG2 and had lots of fun.

I got the game, just watching some youtube tutorials.
Questoin in how they resolve the balance of armies in FOG2 battle. For example, If I am going against a general thats a 2/2 and tactician that give him another 1, so he gets 3 bonus dice rolls and picks the highest in FOGE. How would they make that general so good in FOG2?. Tired troops, experianced troops etc. Do they do that?

Seems the FOG2 battle aint the same. I had 4 hoplites units and 10 shield bearers in FOGE. Yet in FOG2 I had like 14 hoplites and 7 Shield bearers, the proportions were not even the same.

Can some one explain this to me please? I think the units should be exactly the same at least.

I was able to find this thread about leaders:

A different company makes FOG2, so a complete meshing of the games has never been the case.

If your doing a battle in FOG2 that is not the same as in FOGE, then might as well not have it. I do not care about the general stuff, just have the same amount and type of troops, thats really important.

Thats a reall bummer for me, man, its what sold me on this game.

Sorry. By "no problem" I meant that the transition doesn't crash the game. You might try their site at Slitherine. A mod may exist for better unit conversion.

The battle systems are entirely different, and different nations' Empires units of the same type convert to different FOG2 unit types, to reflect the historical composition of each nation's army. Hence simply converting the units on a 1:1 basis (or any other constant ratio) would not maintain the relative combat strength of the two armies in the respective battle systems.

Conversion ratios therefore differ for different Empires unit types and nations, depending on what they convert to in FOG2. Conversion ratios are based on the disparity between the Empires "points value" of the unit and the FOG2 points cost of the unit type it converts to. These "points values" in each game are intended to reflect the unit type's strength in the respective game battle systems.

If a high points value Empires unit translates to a cheap FOG unit, the conversion ratio will be higher and vice versa. So in terms of "points", and hopefully actual battle strength, the balance should be maintained.

Obviously this is a compromise to make two different game systems, from two different studios and development teams, work together as well as they can, while avoiding distorting the strategic balance between the opposing armies.

I fight the important battles in Fields of Glory II and let Fields of Glory Empires sort out the rest of them.

Out of curiosity, what's the situation with DLC in FOGII vs. FOG Empires, is there any crossover in timelines/army TOE that you'd need to have DLC in FOGII to see some unit in FOG Empires represented? Or is the baseline of both games alright?
