This game is far more streamlined and some say it replaces the future of Alea Iacta Est series, which it resembles in theory. The stand out feature here is entropy of polities; a rising and falling of Empires, both big and small. If you liked trade in PoN (who wouldn't?) then you should like this enormously but be aware it's an abstracted trading system rather than semi-manual.
but then I have always regarded PoN as a work of genius held back by the AGE engine and lack of support from its then publisher (Paradox), the idea of reworking those ideas around colonialism and economics in the new game engine does rather inspire me
I liked PoN too and maybe it takes someone to say y'know how good a system in the game is to really look at it from too complex to intriguing and that lessens the fear with working with it. But yea PoN just took too long turn times and needed something like 64 bit.
And I know I can find out in another post , but I was worried about the combat and the switch to FoG2, now I read that it was done obtusely and that there was waiting for that game to open and load and such and when finished it wasn't all that spectacular also. Is it a hassle to use that game all the time to fight?, I will read up, because some reviewss said it was almost seamless transition while maybe earlier reviews stated it was bad..
The only quirk is one time only, you need to have Empires open and launch FoG2 (then close it), this establishes the permanent link between the 2 game.
Having said that, the in-Empires battle resolution system is good, I tend to use FoG2 for an odd battle - terrain/force match up etc
It's actually very smooth. I agree with everything the guy above me said.... It takes less time for you to open the battle in FoG2 then it takes a battle to load in Total War.
