Worth buying?
I love grand strategy games where I can sink a lot of hours, and I have FoG2, so it's -25%..How does it compare to other grand strategy games? Is it worth the money?

Yes it is. There are some really good Reviews on the Steam Store worth Reading about the Game.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this, first time in my life(and Ive been a gamer since the late 70's, this is the best strategy computer game Ive ever played.

Tezzle-I'm one of the Beta testers. I've been playing wargames since 1973, and computer games since 1993. In my opinion, this is one of the most fun strategic wargames out there, ever. The AI is difficult, but doesn't cheat. The ability to play any one of 70+ nations gives it a high replayabilty value. The game is strategically deep, but a lot of what is going on is "under the hood," giving the player the ability to make decisions rather than micromanage his nation. The Multiplayer works really well, and the ability to play the battles in FoG2 enhances both games. As JD mentioned, take a look at some of the user reviews, as well as some of the reviews such as from "Rock, Paper, Shotgun"

I did read some reviews just now, and your replies, I think I'll buy it! Thanks everyone!

One more question, how many hours would a full campaign take?

An old timer too I see. It feels like only yesterday when I brought home my Atari 400 with a 48k memory cartridge :) 1983-84 if memory serves.

I couldn't answer this because I haven't finished one yet. Two campaigns saved right now. Rome, at 166BC and Brigante at 189BC. So neither even close to completed. I play FOG2 about 5% of the time with Rome. So far I have about 100 hours in, dedicated to playing them. The other 20-30 hours were just me tinkering asnd experimenting with saved games and also left it on while sleeping. But yeah, Im thinking a true campaign should be a 100+ hour experience with FOG2 playing making it even longer.

I started out with Avalon Hill's Kriegspiel in 1973. College, girls and the USN slowed my getting into computer gaming until 1993.

No problem. Let me know how it goes. I've posted a short essay on Steam on how to start off as Rome. It is here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1011390/discussions/0/1640917367345880531/

Also, the Slitherine forums has a lot of good advice. Here is a link: http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=534&t=93033

Finally, consider playing multiplayer. It is a blast, and a very easy lift in terms of time (about 10 minutes/turn)

If you play a game for flashy graphics and lovely animations, pass your way...

However, if you want deep and challenging gameplay, you're in for a treat !

Ultimately I've been forced to refund this game back then because of financial reasons, but now I'm getting tempted again...How's the game nowadays?
cranky corvid Jun 4, 2020 @ 11:31am
It's been improved by its updates. The overhaul that made diplomacy and peace treaties much more in-depth is the biggest change since release, but there are numerous smaller improvements as well.
