The country management is much deeper, which hundreds of different buildings to mold the developpement of your country and direct management of your population.
The Progress/Decadence system is realistic and a smart way to prevent blobing like in R2TW and Paradox games, as nations that expend too fast will crumble from the inside because of decadence. That also makes the game a lot more challenging !
The units available to build your armies are more historically correct, no fun nonsense here.
The Diplomacy is on par, I would say that the only aspect which is less developped than R2TW are characters, but those were quite awfully done in the release version of R2TW and not really meaningful (I've heard they improved on that with the updates, but I gave up on that game quite fast to be honest, one of my greatest disappointment as gamer as I was a real fan of the first RTW and they butchered many mecanisms)
Empires is a really must-buy if you are a serious Strategy Gamer, especially if you are already pleased with FoG 2 as it adds a strategic layer to FoG2 battles that many people were hoping for.
The transfer of battles from Fields of Glory Empires to Fields of Glory II works very well and it adds a real sense of urgency to fighting and winning your tactical battles on the field.
I am completely satisfied with my purchase. I also think that a shout-out to Slitherine, the games makers is due for what I have discovered to be their excellent customer service.
I would highly endorse these games as a package purchase to my friends.
Some of the Rome II campaigns I believe do zoom in a bit more and I wouldn't say that's an issue for all Total War games, but in this particular instance, that jumped out as a fatal flaw.
Conversely, in FOGE, there are lots of regions and the campaigns against top tier powers subsequently feel properly monumental with protracted warfare over multiple battles and sieges. Likewise, taking something like 'all of Greece' is a very serious economic asset that you can build to great heights and micromanage economically. Heck, you could probably win through legacy points just taking Greece, the Aegean and the west coast of Anatolia.
They are like 400 buildings here and the commerce is very deep you have to produce ressources that will be traded to other regions to make money culture etc...
and this game has a far better campaign AI than Rome 2, even a huge empire will manage his armies and defend / atack his territory, in Rome a huge empire will loose half his territory before reacting.
FOG 2 also has more challenging battles, total war games have awfull AI specially in Rome 2 (in ATTILA AI is a bit improved..)
I'm just wrapping up my Empires campaign for the night, I will cheerfully write a short review of what I think of your excellent product (s) tomorrow morning. You guys have a real Gem here with FGII and FoGEmpires.
This is a very good game. Now is more a Risk board game then a Gran strategical one. I hope with a better diplomacy and more options (give back a region to an allies...and pass throght a territory without annex it necessarily) will be a GREAT game.
My sympathies, sir! I definitely understand the value of reviews for helping out Inide games and left one on GOG where I bought the game (under my Tohibii handle). You're at 4.4 out of 5 over there!
Given the nature of the beast, I think the current review score here inspires confidence for potential buyers with the civil tone of these forums doubling down on that.
Best of luck and thanks for all the work on this one. o7
Well produced game, it deserves support. I still hope you can produce a Napoleonic game based on FoG Empires with a full battle capabilities, I am sure it would compete well against the Sega game.
Reviewed! I'll post it here as well, since it can serve as my answer to this topic as well :-)
Empires definitely tackles gameplay very different than Paradox games like EU IV or Imperator and CA's Total War series. It has a different game-engine and a lot of innovative game mechanics and concepts that make for an original, interesting and fun gaming experience. Quite frankly, having been playing stategy games for two decades now, it's allready the best grand strategy game within this timeperiod I've ever played. Having played most of the other Ageod games before, I must add that Empires will get supported for a long time and will continue to get even better. I'm quite active on the plethora of forums they operate on and the lead developer has more than hinted on the fascinating future for this game. Don't hesitate, get this game. It certainly is a challenge in the beginning conceptwise, because it introduces new game concepts such as culture, decadence and the interplay between the two of them, but once you've mastered and understood it's innovative rythm of play, you'll love this game. That's a promise.
Gamers will look at the reviews and discount those with 5 minutes that say nothing of use. The reviews for FoG:E are very good. Well done and congrats to AGEod for developing it and Slitherine for publishing it.
