Mac and Linux versions
It’s a shame that, while these games all use DOSBox to run, they are not available to download on Mac or Linux systems.

It would be easy to repackage the games with a Mac or Linux version of DOSBox and provide them for users of those platforms to download. I wish that, at the very least, Steam would let me download this package with some sort of big warning that it is not supported on my platform and if I run into problems it’s on me.

*sigh*

Hey developers!

PlayOnLinux -> Install Steam -> Install windows version. Then it's up to you to use the binaries in a doxbox setup.
DOSBox and ScummVM are two very good and not mutually incompatible ways to play the game on Linux (SteamOS) and Mac. Other much smaller companies with far fewer resources than Activision are offering Linux support with one or both of these methods. DOSBox and ScummVM are freely available and freely usable NO LICENSING FEES and NO RESTRICTIVE LICENSING AGREEMENTS for Activision. Just download, package, profit.

If you are running Linux, download WineTricks, install a Wine version of Steam, install SQC running the Wine version. That should work.

Don't even need to play the game through wine. Just download the games, snag the data files and use the linux version of dosbox. I swear, it's like no one is willing to do five minutes work one time to make entire libraries of dos games available to their native OS for the future.

I understand that. My method takes longer and is more round-about but this way Steam will log your time. If you are pulling native files and using them in a different implimentation of DOSBox, no time is logged. It really just depends if that matters to you.

If we wanted to use wine we wouldn't ask for a native packaging.

And you have a very good point about the minimal effort of making the game run on Linux. So why don't the devs spend this minimal effort to please thousands of potential customers?

To be fair, with something this old, it's not the devs. It's the publisher not caring enough to put out a little extra money to get someone to do the work. Just look at how bad the standard dosbox configs are for games on steam. If I can avoid it, I never buy dosbox based games on steam because of the configs. GOG is a much better source. They actually keep up on things.

edit: For the sake of transparency, the majority of the dosbox games I own on steam are from humble bundles, not direct purchases.

I completely agree with this. However, I am not a dev so I can't provide this. Waiting for support that will never come is not a real solution.

It's Activision. They don't care.

Seems nuts that they never packaged these games for anything but Windows after all these years. Come on Activision. Gets with the times and switch!
In this time and age one might think we'd reached a platform freedom which we play our games on.

Only via Linux "port" would i be paying for playing this.

There are so many classic adventure titles for Linux already, such as Full Throttle and Maniac Mansion 2 etc.
Its really a shame!

Old classics run better on DOS-Box and other tools than on M$ SpywareOS 11.

Guess I'll just find some other way to run these games...

Yes, that is what many end up doing in more greater numbers. Instabuy though, if Linux support. It's been years :Emo_1_Happy:
