Any tips for a beginner?
I've seen this game is considered hard, I play a lot of Quake PVE and thought I was getting the hang of faster retro-first person shooters but this one seems to be REALLY brutal. Took me a dozen tries or so to be E1M1 and then felt I was missing something halfway through E1M2. Biggest question I have is about hitscanning enemies, I feel like I am taking damage insanely fast and I'm wondering if the game is a test in reflexes or are there ways to mitigate damage besides having a fast trigger finger. Quake has the benefit of being able to weave through most projectiles and it doesn't really seem like that's going to be an option here.

What difficulty are you playing on

Use the crouch, it actually helps reduce the chance of getting damaged by hitscanners. Play it like a Woo film; dive into a room, guns blazing, toward cover. You'll find the shotgun and Tommy gun are useful here.

Get good with dynamite, it's your most useful weapon as it helps minimize your exposure to enemies. Proximity fuse, remote, and old-fashioned fuse, own throwing around dynamite and you'll do a lot better.

Certain enemies have specific strats; Flesh Gargoyles don't like the shotgun or tesla as it puts them in a pain state, Bloated butchers can take several shotgun shells to kill, but they're weak to fire, Zombies are easy to kill with the pitchfork once you get the rhythm down and listen for the real death scream.

The Way of the Flesh is actually probably the hardest episode of the original Blood as it's so absolutely conservative about giving you ammunition.

dynamite and lot of save/load are your best friend in ep1. Learn effective way to kill each enemies and yes cultist is the most annoying enemies in blood as they has extremely accuracy, hard hit, and godlike reaction time.

stay away from "walking" severed hands. Love Dynamites, Lit the bug spray, use napalm launcher wisely

Shotgun and tommy gun stun hitscanners, preventing them from shooting you.
Don't start on the highest difficulty just yet.
On easier difficulties you can get to know the basic layout of levels so you know your way around.
After learning the levels, feel free to challenge yourself a bit more.

The game won't play fair on you. Don't play fair with the game. See a pack of cultist? Don't think about outgunning them to prove your skills. Chuck a dynamite bundle their way and be showered with their insides.
