Why do we lose all our weapons when respawning in singleplayer?
I mean, come on...

Well, I tried to experience the original, but was unsuccessful.
DOSBox isn't that difficult to set up or you can get https://store.steampowered.com/app/2280/Ultimate_Doom/

You can replicate vanilla with gzdoom though, by setting the video render to software in a 320 resolution and compatibility set to Doom Strict.

I can't tell if I'm getting trolled or not.

Doom and Quake and every other FPS I remember carried your weapons over each mission, and when you died, you went back to what you had at the start of that mission.

Blood doesn't do this????

Is this some kind of elaborate troll or have people actually meme'd the mandela effect into real life.

I thought I was getting a freaking bug

OP never heard the term "pistol start"?

You are the one who is getting a mandela effect, or haven't played enough DOS FPS to know pistol is a standard and it's a feature.

"The maps in Doom and Doom II were typically created so that the player could finish them from scratch. When Sandy Petersen was asked about the things he found disappointing in Doom, he said he felt the episodes were too easy because id designers did not properly take account the player's ability to carry ordnance from earlier levels. The gameplay testing was based mainly on pistol starts, separately for each level. According to Sandy Petersen, "Most people started levels with some kind of significant equipment. However, almost all our playtesting was done starting each level with just a pistol. We made the game too easy for the average player."

And I "cringe" when some shmuck feels superior, cause he played the inferior version first.
Like people who don't like added difficulty modes or balancing that makes games more easy, cause they had to suffer through terrible balancing and made it somehow.

Or like these elitist shmucks in the Monster Hunter community...
"I'm here since the first game, I know what a difficult MH game is!!!"
Yeah great... you've played a game with terrible hitboxes and overall kinda unfair balancing.
Now let me enjoy the game while I congrat you that you made it through the third reich and are now allowed to eat bananas.

If you die in vanilla Doom and most any other 90's FPS game, you lose your weapons. It's not loading the last autosave like GZDoom and other source ports can. If you don't manually save and load, you will be losing those weapons on death.

Yes but Doom didn't do that. So you're not really answering...

"The term pistol start is used among Doom players to refer to the initial spawn status of the player after beginning a game, or after dying and restarting the current level."

Doom 100% does that, all weapons gone when you die, that's why it's called a pistol start because all you have is a pistol and i played the og on a dell 600 laptop

What's the issue anyways, all levels are designed and tested to be beatable with no-weapon start. If you want to keep your weapons all you have to do is press "quick save".

I'd rather have this feature than removing it like the default option for GZDoom. I like it when games gives you more options rather than baby sit you for everything.

Or how I like to do it: Only save at the beginning of each level.
I do this in basically every classic FPS, so death isn't too punishing but it also doesn't make the game a cakewalk, no matter which difficulty is played.

I like to use this approach too, doesn't feel like save scumming but don't get kicked all way back to the start ^_^

Expectation of a reasonable save and restart system is not baby sitting.

Why are you so annoyed about an obtuse feature not really being remembered that well by people who might not have played the game for over two decades eh?

Same for people who claims to have played Doom despite only having made the game with Brutal Doom

Do I sound annoyed? I was just correcting you to stop misinformation from spreading. As for that comment, I was just giving my opinion about no-weapon/pistol start feature of old FPS games and how some people were pointing it out to be as a "flaw".

Infact you sound like the annoyed one by claiming that I'm somehow annoyed. How was I supposed to know that you haven't played the game for over two decades? I'm not your best friend.

I'd also like to point out that pistol start isn't really an obscure feature considering levels were designed and tested around this feature, claimed by Sandy Peterson. So yea, I think it is quite an important feature, although this is just my opinion, not a personal attack towards you.
