How Do You Deal With Saving?
So while I like these old shooters a lot I consistently find myself with an issue with quicksaving and the punishment's you get for death. I like being punished for death but in some of these games levels can last like 20 minutes which feels like too much and deaths can come from nowhere in some games, But on the other hand I don't really trust myself with quicksaving as it leads to the game being completely tension-less as I spam the quicksave key or I forget to save and so may as well just start from the level's beginning. How do people here use quicksaves or do you not use them at all?

I save-scum all the time, I don't think it make it tension-less, you gotta know and learn by trial and error. Just save when you want, it's still really fun.

I save at the beginning of a level, when I pick up a key, right before a boss fight and before and after difficult platforming sections.

I only deviate from this when I get frustrated with a level, then I also save before and after the encounter that gave me trouble. I don't do this before having retried the level at least a few times from the start.

I would recommend playing classic fps on a lower difficulty first instead of having to rely on QS and QL every 10 seconds. This also gives you an extra reason for a replay on higher difficulty which will go smoother because you now know the weapons, enemy types, some secrets etc.

In Fresh Supply you can even fine-tune the difficulty entirely to your liking.

To me, save scumming is as bad for gameplay as the regenerating health mechanic of modern shooters.

;)

You have to play tactical. Don't rush into a room filled with hitscanners but take a peek first and don't hesitate to throw in some TNT before entering when you hear enemies (TNT can bounce from walls when you use the alt-fire mode). Use cover, crawling also makes you harder to hit in Blood. Make sure you can easily use your Doctor's Bag in the heat of battle, I use my middle mouse button for this.

Learn which weapons are most effective against which enemies. Learn which enemies are priority targets. Never stay stationary when enemies have you in their line of sight. Backtrack to previously cleared out rooms when overwhelmed and let them come to you. Surprise them with Proximity or Remote Bombs. Always be on the lookout for secrets.

Eh, if you wanna play that way that's great but I don't think it's for me. Personally I feel it does take away some tension and I'd much rather play with some noticeable punishment.

Ooh, I like the idea of saving at keys, that works pretty well for me, thanks. With the instant deaths I wasn't so much meaning dying to a lot of enemies, more like traps on the stage you might not have seen. Like Duke Nukem 3D likes to use a lot of those tripwire mines which will instantly kill you and going back to the start of the level for something that you just didn't initially notice can be annoying.

I just quick save in the beginning of level and thats it.But I also play on second easiest difficulty, so dying is not much of the problem to me.

I save whenever I feel like it. Beats checkpoints.

I always save at the start of a level, and if I feel like I've been in a level for a long time sometimes i'll quick save again. Rarely will I quicksave if I want to go off path and check out something risky, but it happens.
