Tbh I would suggest checking out Blender though, its super great for unwrapping.
Even if your main thing is sculpting, blocking out in a box modelling style 3D app is pretty great. Anyway, good luck.
Here are my work flow steps:
Steps to using 3D Coat:
1. Sculpt
2. Retopo
--Manual with strokes, etc or Right click layer, select AutoTopo
3. Initial UV mapping:
In Retopo menu, select Unwrap (not the Unwrap button in UV menu)
In top menu, select bake textures (with Normals)
That will get initial UV mapping performed. No clue if I really need to bake, might just be my superstitions.
4. UV map adjustments (as necessary)
Go to UV menu.
Select AutoMap to auto layout UV map if necessary
The UV map and the Paint map are not the same thing. Still figuring that out myself.
5. Go to Paint menu
Paint models as desired
6. Bake textures again (as necessary)
7. Render or Export / Save models
