Hand over teammate?

There is a big robot that shoots lasers and kill you if you don't hand over a teammate.

Do I have to hand over one or is it possible to run away/jump and survive the laser?

What is the purpose of the teammates? Are you supposed to hand them all over or can you "save" them all?
