Weird Mouse Controls, 60 FPS lock and other jank
I really want to love this game but I just refunded it.

The story is fun, the game is fun. The scale of fights is unbelievable.

But there seems to be some massive issues with this game that I would never forgive any other developer for... and since this is the 2019 5th major release of the series, I am surprised that the technical issues of the game are so overlooked.

At its core, I believe this game is a shoddy console port.

Let's begin:

60 FPS Lock.
What the heck is that?! I do not want to play at 60FPS. Apparently this is because the physics engine is tied to the framerate... so not an easy issue to fix.

No FoV slider
What on earth... no fov slider?

The mouse is really janky.
I had to swap to controller to properly use the controls. There seems to be this torso movement thing with the characters... but it just flicked my aim in random directions upwards so I gave up on using a mouse pretty quickly.
Examples:

Matchmaking is weird
You create a game room and start playing waiting for people to join. But there is no scaling! So if you start early, the game just throws everything at you as if you were 4 players.
Really the whole room system should be chucked out for a party system and matchmaking... there are better ways to do it here. And being able to join a game in progress would be neat - even as a spectator.

Anyway, for a 2019 game it all seems a bit archaic. I can certainly see some charm in the jankyness... it reminds me of Time Crisis from the games Arcade I used to go to as a kid. But I can't forgive these cardinal PC gaming sins... this isn't the arcade anymore!

Hopefully there will be technical overhauls in later releases. Until then...

BUYER BEWARE.

There is some simplistic scaling with online.

I suspect 100% of these issues will still be in EDF6 though lol

The old EDF player in me is chucking at your 60FPS complaint. So much stuff happens in these games you will be lucky to stay above 30FPS.

I could agree that the menu UI is a bit jank but the amount of stuff they added to this game over 4.1 more than makes up for the smaller issues.

EDF: Iron Rain was made by a different company and it has it's own set of quirks if 5 isn't to your liking but you want to smash bugs.

The game has a 94% positive reception. A pity you have to be the 6%.

The mouse is direct input, which means it is perfect. The only issue I can imagine you had was playing Fencer with heavy weapons equipped which intentionally has slow aim and drift to balance out their power. You can equip special items that remove this in-game.

4 player scaling when launching an online mission solo is used by veterans—they create private rooms and launch solo to play the game in super challenge mode. For everyone else, you're not suppose to launch an online room solo—wait for someone to join and then you'll get proper 2/3/4 player scaling.

The game is 'Very Positive' on Steam which places it in a 80 - 94% review bracket.

With regards to mouse input:
It's not Fencer - which plays awkwardly but understandable he's a walking turret. It is with all the characters as I quote: "flicked my aim in random directions upwards".

Here's what I could find online:
"The game uses a grid system for aiming which, when using the keyboard and mouse, relies on the standard 72 DPI for mice. Higher DPI breaks this system, resulting in erratic aiming and camera movement"

So using my G502X, it looks like my mouse is... too expensive for the game?
Or how about just acknowledging this is a crappy console port.
Weird mouse, minimal steamworks integration and a 60FPS lock.

As for not being supposed to launch an online game solo... wtf is that nonsense. I'm not hanging out in a lobby for 30 minutes waiting for people. That's why I am proposing *a better system* that has been used in games since the 2000s.

There is still no excuse for a game to be locked to 60FPS and have this much jank and ask for $60. I don't accept it in any other series, and I'm going to with EDF5 either!

Not everybody is the old EDF player running a Dell from 2009! I think I will keep away from the series - I'll pay plenty when a proper PC game comes to the series that matches modern hardware.

Do you know what direct mouse input means? It means the game has the same sensitivity as your mouse does on your desktop. I've played over 600 hours, you have played for less than 2, I have never had any mouse problems. I have never heard of anyone having mouse problems in years. All you can say is the mouse is "weird". Huh.

I'm not gonna deny that dynamic drop in/out for multiplayer would be ideal, but you have to realize the game released back in 2017. It is old news now and any old news game isn't going to have the most active multiplayer. So if you don't want to wait for someone to join your room then join someones instead. I don't think this is unreasonable for a 6 year old game.

Anyway, you've refunded the game and obviously nothing is going to change your mind. I'm posting because your misconceptions annoyed me.

I have the playtime I do because the jank hit me immediately.

Again, this is not me just saying "mouse is weird":

Okay, bro, just for you I booted up the game and jacked my mouse DPI up to max. The aim is extremely fast...because the mouse DPI is jacked way the ♥♥♥♥ up. I wouldn't play like that, that is too fast. No jitter to speak of, just fast as ♥♥♥♥.

So why didn't, you know, press the button on your mouse and kick the DPI down a peg and try that? Again, the mouse aim mimics the mouse speed on the desktop. Whatever ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you posted in blue is just that, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Posted by someone full of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Enough dude. We've both lost. You lost at the very start when you felt the need to type long ass post about how you refunded the game. Why? Why did you feel the need to do this? I lost when I got annoyed by it.

Released in 2017 and still going for full price? This is Activision level nonsense.

I know you are not the dev but you may as well be #1 fanboy excusing all this.
I could only find a release date of 2019 on Steam/SteamDB/Steam charts. The depot for the game was created in December of 2018 so you must be referring to an earlier Japanese release. But even 2017 is about 10 years shy of decent matchmaking systems.
- Left 4 Dead 1 (rel: 2008) introduced Steamworks API - now adopted by thousands of games.
- Call of Duty 4 (rel: 2007) and Call of Duty 6 (rel: 2009)
- Halo 2 (rel: 2004)
Understandably these games are running on larger budgets (yet none of them charge as much as this) but they all run on different engines and all released over a decade and a half ago. 2017 was also the year of release for PlayerUnknown BattleGrounds, Destiny 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Sea of Thieves (still old news?), Battlefield 1 and Fortnite. There is a massive catalogue of games that predate 2017 that did it right (even if the games themselves are not necessarily better).

Honestly, I think this game could be better than all of them except for the really bad controls and shoddy matchmaking with its severe lack of any sort of Steam integration. Steamworks API had been out for nearly a decade in 2017 and there was a two year gap to integrate a system for Steam release.

My DPI isn't jacked up at all.

It is the
GRID SYSTEM
they use, not the sensitivity - I'm not some crazy maniac!

Some crazy person found a fix using CheatEngine:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/1007040/discussions/0/1640916564835507526/?ctp=3
but I don't buy games on Steam to have to inject code to fix my mouse flicking everywhere.

Is it so hard to just click play and enjoy? Apparently in 2017/2019 that was not possible... we just did not have the technology!
Honorable_D Aug 14, 2023 @ 9:50pm
Everything you just posted was from 2019, when the game first launched on Steam. Do you have anything modern? Like in 2023 or 2022? I frequent this forum and as I sad above, no one has made a mouse complaint in a long, long time.

It is possible when the game first launched it had a bug...that was fixed a long time ago.

How much longer you gonna continue your crusade? I'm bored of it now. Aren't you?

This game did not receive a single update since release... so how could they have fixed anything?

You're really dedicated dude, I gotta give you that. Digging up old ass posts, probably looking up Steam DB or some ♥♥♥♥. You've put in some serious effort into this troll and I gotta respect that.

You don't honestly think you're fooling anyone though, do you? The game is up, pack your ♥♥♥♥ and move on, but if you really wanna keep riding this ♥♥♥♥ stained merry-go-round I'll talk to ya tomorrow.

Hopefully someone is getting some laughs out of this.

It seems I have upset your fanboy false memory of the game actually getting an update that fixed something... LMAO. I didn't even need to look it up, I have the SteamDB browser extension.

I used evidence to get my points across. You can not dismiss the ever mounting mountain of evidence. My victory is bittersweet for I still can not play the game... :bummer:

I don't think the game's age is an excuse for the lobby system. And I believe it's mainly unchanged in EDF6?

I love EDF but the lobby/matchmaking system is the one real bugbear I have with the franchise.
