There is such a thing as cartoony style, and then there is such a thing as forward facing explosion sprites, cardboard box houses and enemy corpses popping out of existence with no animation. I know 4k volumetric ant farts isn't necessary, but i'm tired of hearing again and again that we can't have Iron Rain graphics on a good EDF game because "it wouldnt work with the amount of enemies". I also think that Sandlot certainly has enough money to do it if they want to.
it definitely has a different feel ofc (more heavy, realistic) but that's the whole point, it's a spinoff
i agree with this but tbf we dont know how these games are coded and we have not compared the different mechanics, interactions and polygons and visual effects in each game vs each other and how much performance they have left to use for anything else, not to mention differences in staff size and budget, keeping in mind that japanese video game staff usually tend to be really small yet create pretty amazing things
im not familiar with dynasty warriors (or musou in general, even though i play a ton of japanese games) but i have played quite a bit of samurai warriors 4 which is basically dynasty warriors but using a japanese settings, and the enemy count is impressive but the AI of the avg enemy in SW4, whether a soldier or a commander, is nowhere near as elaborate as that of even a regular ant in EDF. i think a lot of ppl heavily underappreciate the AI work for the enemies, as well the allies, in EDF
i can certainly agree with the OP though, ive checked a vid or two of some EDF6 gameplay and im super excited about it but it doesnt look like the graphics have changed much...they could've shaken it up a little by going with a bit of fresh art direction at least
However, you can't threaten us with a good time. The Japanese Government really cracked down on the Yakuza in the last decade. While I understand the Yakuza aren't "Good Guys" this may have been a very short sighted approach. China has managed to subvert the Criminal behaviors of their Triad gangs and place them throughout South East Asia as a way of exerting Chinese Political influence on Nations that would otherwise fully resist China.
Of course, China has way more latitude in terms of how it handles it's citizens and is more than willing to violate human rights of completely innocent and HARMLESS groups... so it's possible if Japan didn't suppress the Yakuza they would have ended up at the mercy of Organized Crime like much of South Korea faces with the Kkangpae. South Korea has been undergoing a seriously concerning societal depression despite the international success of many of their corporations.
All that being said, it's kinda crazy to blame the Yakuza for having any negative effect on video games. Nevermind the fact Sandlot is publishing the game to please their Japanese Audiences... who really EMBRACE the cheesy monster aesthetic and are sticklers for expectations... Yakuza haven't engaged in sweeping attempts to subvert the culture since they departed from their roots as con artist carnival thugs. Even at their height of power in the 1960's when they controlled much of Japanese media... they were only making sure it didn't report on them in a bad light. Or really report on them at all. They didn't try to force the public to acknowledge them as morally superior or pretend to be heroes. That relationship formed organically.
I love the B-movie flair of these games and don't feel ripped off at all. I much prefer this to a badly microtransaction ruled game or game where the "most important" thing about half the characters is how sexually demented they are.
However... the OP does make a good point: I would love to see Sandlot invest more money in games. I don't want them to change EDF the way the OP said but to make games with similar gameplay and different themes. I love shootin' and looting.
Also what I learned so far in this entertainment industry that becoming mainstream doesn't really mean a good thing. Since you may have to sacrifice a lot of charm and uniqueness from these games in order to meet the "Global Standard" thing.
I just think there is alot of gameplay polish to be made with the newest EDF games. (Ranger/Air Raider having dedicated jump button, better helicopter controls, being able to join mid mission, riding on friendly vehicles, spiders not shooting through walls, etc). It would also be nice if these updates arent TIED TO A NEW RELEASE.
I don't mind graphics if the game is fun, but i'm tired of seeing the "decent looking horde games isnt possible" argument when it's clearly proven wrong a dozen times.
